n. The state or condition of being spaceworthy.
Wikipedia
Spaceworthiness, or aerospaceworthiness, is a property, or ability of a spacecraft to perform to its design objectives and navigate successfully through both the space envirionment and the atmosphere as a part of a journey to or from space.
As in airworthiness, the spaceworthiness of a spacecraft depends on at least three basic components:
- design of the spacecraft, which covers activities of engineering evaluation, simulations, laboratory and prototype tests, and experimental flights;
- production, which seeks to ensure that the spacecraft has been assembled in conformity with the design specification;
- maintenance of the spacecraft, after production, before and during each flight mission.
Spaceworthiness is typically maintained through a program of (periodic) preventive or predictive maintenance, and / or with the aid of a system of analysis, diagnosis and management of health and reliability of the spacecraft.
Usage examples of "spaceworthiness".
One final inspection for the spaceworthiness certificate, and we’re away.
Her performance rating is as good as the day the CAB awarded us our spaceworthiness certificate.
But then a lot of the Adamist starships using Valisk operated on the borderline of CAB spaceworthiness requirements.
Bloody hell, you’re going up against Laton in an antique wreck that barely rates its CAB spaceworthiness licence.
The Mark II had just received its spaceworthiness certificate from NASA.
When the module's thrust drive had warmed enough to take over from the energy cells, and diagnostics had confirmed her integrity, her spaceworthiness, the massive clamps which gripped her to the rest of the cruiser would release, and she would drift free.
