Exodus (Bob Marley & the Wailers album)

Exodus is the ninth studio album by Jamaican reggae recording band Bob Marley and the Wailers, first released 3 June 1977 though Island Records. With the other original members leaving the group, Marley recruited a new backing band. Their first major success was Rastaman Vibration (1976). On 3 December 1976, an assassination attempt was made on Bob Marley's life in which his chest was grazed and his arm was struck, but he survived. Following the assassination attempt Marley left Jamaica and was exiled to London where Exodus was recorded.

Exodus is a reggae album, incorporating elements of blues, soul, British rock and funk. The album's production has been characterized as laid-back with pulsating bass beats and an emphasis on piano, trumpet and guitar. Unlike previous albums from the Wailers, Exodus thematically moves away from cryptic story-telling; instead it revolves around themes of change, religious politics, and sex. The album is split into two halves: the first half revolves around religious politics while the second half is focused on themes of sex and keeping faith.

The album was a success both critically and commercially; receiving gold certifications in the US, UK and Canada, and was the album that propelled Marley to international stardom. In 2007 Exodus was remastered and re-released for its 30th anniversary. Exodus has more tracks on Marley’s greatest hits album, Legend—the highest selling reggae album of all time—than any of his other records.

The operation is carried out under the auspices of the Mossad Le'aliyah Bet. The book then goes on to trace the histories of the various main characters and the ties of their personal lives to the birth of the new Jewish state.

The final North American single " Exodus '04" charted moderately in America overall, while the lead UK single " You Make Me Want to Be a Man" failed to achieve higher success in that region as well. On his website, Hunter° explains how the inspiration for many of the tracks came from the Book of Exodus.1 Additionally, on the back cover of the CD booklet he writes: "Exodus is a journey into the presence of God; to hunger for God in a passionate way, craving that intimacy and hearing the spirit; to commit everything we are, and to say that we are going to run for and live our lives one hundred-percent; to be movers and shakers for the cause of our love, wherever that leads us... even into the desert of our lives; and to ask questions and find answers of who we are and where we are going..."

The inspiration for the album is reflected in its biblical and Christian-themed lyrics. Six tracks feature lyrics taken directly from the Bible, namely from the Exodus, Ezekiel, Romans and Acts. The other lyrics are by Hunter° himself, but the religious themes are highlighted throughout, with the "you" in the original lyrics always referring to God, although never written with a capital Y.

After the original release on Nettwerk, the album was re-released on the Christian music label Sparrow Records. The song "Go" has been used in several movie trailers, the film The Italian Job the trailer for National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the video games Enter the Matrix and SSX 3, and in ABC’s show Alias.
