Studentgems

studentgems.com is a UK-based job website for students with commercial skills. It aims to provide businesses and individuals with a near-professional resource for less than the professional price by connecting them with students for one-off jobs and projects.

The business was set up by Sue Harrison and Joanna Ward in 2007 to act as a central place where the talents of students and recent graduates could be showcased and utilised by businesses and individuals. The site now has over 25,000 registered users, including 21,000 students and 4,000 employers.

The site allows students to create profiles displaying their achievements, including a list of their skills. Students can also upload media to their profiles to provide evidence of their talents. Currently there are 1,682 different skills listed on the site, such as graphic design, web development and music lessons.

Employers pay to list a job. Students can search through these jobs for free and also receive e-mail updates of jobs matching their listed skills. Employers can also use the search function to find the candidates with the required skills to complete their job, and are shown a results page with a list of relevant students. Utilising the on-site messaging system, both parties then negotiate the terms of the work, and leave mutual feedback when it is completed.

In 2009, studentgems received a £150,000 investment from eight Angel investors to aid their growth.
