Silver Lake

Silver Lake may refer to:

Silver Lake (Hollis, New Hampshire)

Silver Lake , formerly known as Long Pond, is a small lake in the town of Hollis, New Hampshire, United States. The lake was formerly surrounded by summer vacation cottages and camps, but most of these buildings have now been converted for use as year-round homes. Silver Lake State Park occupies the northern end of the lakeshore.

The lake is located on NH Route 122, north of the Hollis traffic light. The lake at its deepest is deep, and there is a deep channel running down the middle of the lake that ranges from at the deepest. Fish species include largemouth bass, yellow perch, sunfish, pickerel, hornpout/ catfish, and a few very large common carp. The lake is deep enough and has a continual supply of cold clean water from below which can support both rainbow and brown trout.

The lake has many natural springs that provide fresh clean water, and the small dam at the north end of the lake near the state park controls the level and output. The output flows under NH 122 and goes into Dunklee Pond which then outflows to Pennichuck Brook, a tributary of the Merrimack River.

The lake has no public boat launch, although parking at the state park can allow carry-in boats, sailboats, kayaks and other small boats. The lake has restricted hours that allow for boats to go above , but has no horsepower limit.

The lake has been tested for acceptable bacteria levels, and as of 2006 the State of New Hampshire had deemed the lake acceptable for swimming.

In the early 1900s when the lake was called Long Pond, it housed two dance halls, Wallace Grove and Morrills Grove. These dance halls were a very popular retreat on summer nights for many locals, some coming from as far away as Boston. Soldiers would take the train up from Fort Devens with the hope of meeting a special lady. Both of these dance halls have been closed for a long time, but the lake remains a retreat for many in the summer and winter months.

Silver Lake (Oregon)

Silver Lake is a lake in Lake County, Oregon, United States. It is east of the community of Silver Lake. It is unknown who first gave the lake its descriptive name. Central Oregon residents attribute it to John C. Frémont, although no proof has been found, and he would not have seen the lake on his first visit to Oregon in 1843. The Klamath called the lake Kalpshi, which may have been derived from the word kalapsh, meaning a decayed log. The name was used because of the petrified wood near the lake.

Silver Lake (Rochester, Minnesota)

Silver Lake is a small, freshwater reservoir in Southeastern Minnesota. The lake lies on the South Fork Zumbro River, located approximately one mile north of downtown Rochester.

The electrical power plant operated by Rochester Public Utilities uses the lake for cooling. Since the lake operates as a heat sink, it doesn't freeze in the winter. The warm water attracts a large number of Canada geese that remain in the area year round. However, RPU has recently voted to shut down the power plant by the end of 2015.

Silver Lake (Woodridge, New York)

Silver Lake, one of three by that name in Sullivan County, New York, United States, is located just southeast of the village of Woodridge. It was created in the 1840s when Sandburg Creek was dammed to provide reliable water for the "summit", or highest-elevation, section of the Delaware and Hudson Canal, between Wurtsboro and Napanoch. After the canal closed, the lake that had been created, initially called Woods Lake, became an attraction for guests at the Jewish summer resort communities in that area of the Catskill Mountains.

The lake is irregularly shaped, along a northwest-southeasterly axis roughly two-thirds of a mile long, in surface area when full. One bay on the south side is crossed by the former right-of-way of the Orange & Western Railroad; a stone culvert underneath connects it with the main lake. The northwest end lies in the village of Woodridge, which has built a small park along the lake around a beach that established itself in the early resort days. Another beach developed at the opposite end, just north of the dam. There are some houses and businesses with lake frontage, but other than that its shores remain undeveloped.

In 1999, water undermined some sections of the original dam and caused a breach, draining the lake to merely one-quarter its size. The village sought and received state and federal grants to repair the dam and restore the lake, whose near-absence had hurt local business. However, the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Conservation Commission's successor as regulator of dams, held up repairs while it considered whether to reclassify the dam as higher risk in case of failure, which could have raised the cost and forced a redesign. After eventually getting approval from DEC and putting the project out for bid, a redesign of the dam that preserved its historic character, the village suffered another setback when the lowest bid came back at $1.5 million, almost twice what the project had been budgeted for.

The village is in the process of building a wastewater treatment plant that will discharge into the lake along the south side just past its park. In 2006, the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) had obtained a consent decree requiring that the village address the sewage spills that frequently occurred in heavy rains. It had been using a Town of Fallsburg plant some distance from the village, but that hadn't been enough.

The lake is crescent shaped. When the town of Silver Lake was founded in 1871, the lake already existed. Silver Lake is one of at least six oxbow lakes formed from the Kansas River.

Since the lakebed is mostly shallow, the surface area of Silver Lake can vary considerably. During times of much rain the surface area of the lake can be at least .
