Old English cyningdom; see king + -dom. Cognate with Old Saxon kuningdom, Middle Dutch koninghdom, Old Norse konungdomr. The usual Old English word was cynedom; Middle English also had kingrick (for second element, see Reichstag). Meaning "one of the realms of nature" is from 1690s. Kingdom-come "the next world" (1785) is from the Lord's Prayer.

In biology, kingdom ( latin: regnum, pl. regna) is the second highest taxonomic rank below domain. Kingdoms are divided into smaller groups called phyla. Traditionally, textbooks from the United States used a system of six kingdoms ( Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Archaea/ Archaeabacteria, and Bacteria/ Eubacteria) while textbooks in Great Britain, India, Australia, Latin America and other countries used five kingdoms (Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista and Monera). Some recent classifications based on modern cladistics have explicitly abandoned the term "kingdom", noting that the traditional kingdoms are not monophyletic, i.e., do not consist of all the descendants of a common ancestor.

Kingdom (professional wrestling)

Kingdom, was a professional wrestling company in Japan from 1997 to 1998. It was essentially a continuation of UWF International, having most of its former roster: Nobuhiko Takada, Yoji Anjo, Kazushi Sakuraba, Daijiro Matsui, Naoki Sano, Masahito Kakihara, Yoshihiro Takayama, Kenichi Yamamoto and Hiromitsu Kanehara.

Kingdom (2007 TV series)

Kingdom is a British television series produced by Parallel Film and Television Productions for the ITV network. It was created by Simon Wheeler and stars Stephen Fry as Peter Kingdom, a Norfolk solicitor who is coping with family, colleagues, and the strange locals who come to him for legal assistance. The series also starred Hermione Norris, Celia Imrie, Karl Davies, Phyllida Law and Tony Slattery.

The first series of six one-hour episodes was aired in 2007 and averaged six million viewers per week. Despite a mid-series ratings dip, the executive chairman of ITV praised the programme and ordered a second series, which was filmed in 2007 and broadcast in January and February 2008. Filming on the third series ran from July to September 2008 for broadcast from 7 June 2009.

Stephen Fry announced in October 2009 that ITV was cancelling the series, a fact later confirmed by the channel, which said that given tighter budgets, more expensive productions were being cut.

Kingdom (comics)

Kingdom is a comic series created by Dan Abnett and Richard Elson and published in 2000 AD starting in 2006.

The story revolves around a genetically modified dog named after Gene Hackman. A sequel The Promised Land (2007–2008) tells the story of Gene Hackman's encounter with a community of humans living in a compound which they call the Promised Land.

Kingdom (song)

"Kingdom" is a song performed by Depeche Mode's singer Dave Gahan. The song was written and produced by Gahan, Andrew Phillpott, and Christian Eigner for Gahan's second solo album Hourglass (2007). The song was released as the album's first single in October 2007. The single version removed the third stanza of the first verse, the instrumental part preceding the second chorus, and most of the bridge at the end.

Kingdom is the sixth studio album by Japanese singer-songwriter Kumi Koda. It was released on January 30, 2008, a week after her single anytime. The album debuted at #1 on the Oricon Weekly Charts with sales of 421,302. It remained on the charts for thirty-three weeks. Kingdom (previously titled Navy St.) is an American drama television series created by Byron Balasco. The series premiered on October 8, 2014 on the Audience Network. It stars Frank Grillo, Kiele Sanchez, Matt Lauria, Jonathan Tucker, Nick Jonas with Joanna Going. Season one consists of ten episodes.

On October 17, 2014, DirecTV announced that the series was renewed for an additional 20 episodes, 10 of which aired in 2015 and 10 in 2016. On July 7, 2016, it was renewed for a third season.

Kingdom (manga)

is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yasuhisa Hara. The manga provides a fictionalized account of the Warring States period primarily through the experiences of the war orphan Xin and his comrades as he fights to become the greatest general under the heavens, and in doing so, unifying China for the first time in history. The series was adapted into a thirty-eight episode anime series by studio Pierrot that aired from June 4, 2012 to February 25, 2013. A second season was announced and aired from June 8, 2013 to March 1, 2014. An English language release of the anime was licensed by Funimation Entertainment.

Kingdom (EP)

Kingdom is an EP by the Polish death metal band Vader. It was released on August 21, 1998 in Japan by Avalon Marquee, and in United States, Europe, and Poland on November 10, 1998 via Pavement Music, Metal Mind, and System Shock/Impact Records.

Kingdom was recorded, and mixed in July, August, and December 1997, and February 1998 at Selani Studio in Olsztyn, and 2.47 Studio in Warsaw. Kingdom (video game)

Kingdom is a kingdom-building simulation game developed by Thomas van den Berg and Marco Bancale (also known as noio and Licorice) with support from publisher Raw Fury Games. The title was released on 21 October 2015 for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux systems with a release for Xbox One planned in 2016. Versions for mobile devices are also planned but not yet announced. An expansion, Kingdom: New Lands, is expected to be released in August 2016.

The game is played out on a pixel art-based 2 dimensional landscape; the player controls a king or queen that rides back and forth, collecting coins and using those coins to spend on various resources, such as hiring soldiers and weaponsmiths, building defenses against creatures that can attack and steal the king or queen's crown which will end the game, and otherwise expanding their kingdom. The player has otherwise little direct control of the game, and thus must use the coins they collect in judicious ways.

Kingdom received generally positive reviews appreciating the game's art and music, and its approach that required the players to figure out what to do based on these elements, but felt that the tedious nature of some tasks in the game affected its end-game and replayability.
