Dreams (band)

Dreams was one of the original prominent jazz rock bands in the period of the late 1960s and early 1970s, and recorded for Columbia Records. Dreams was formed by Jeff Kent and Doug Lubahn, who together wrote and arranged all their original songs. The band began as a trio and evolved into a horn-based band over time. They were later joined by others such as Will Lee, Don Grolnick, Bob Mann, and Eddie Vernon.

Dreams selected as their producer, composer and sound engineer, Fred Weinberg, whose work included albums for Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, La Lupe, Mongo Santamaria, Celia Cruz, Illustration ( Alan Lorber's group), Little Anthony and many others. Phil Ramone, another highly respected producer and studio owner, for whom Weinberg worked at the time at a studio named A & R in New York City, gave his blessings to Weinberg to record and mix the Dreams LP with former Atlantic A-1 engineer Jim Reeves at CBS Studios in New York City. During the Dreams sessions the recording sessions were moved by CBS execs to their CBS Chicago Studios because the CBS 52nd street studios became booked for several weeks by Paul Simon, and because Dreams had a deadline for their LP release. The album received a full page ad and a favorable review in Billboard Magazine.

Dreams' second and final album Imagine My Surprise was produced in Memphis by Steve Cropper. Cropper wanted to "help the audience to better understand the group" so in his production he put "funkier, more commercial rhythms behind [the band]" while trying to "keep jazz up front at the same time."

While Dreams did not achieve the commercial success of either Chicago or Blood Sweat & Tears, they did serve as a launchpad for eventually prominent jazz fusion artists Billy Cobham, Don Grolnick, and Randy & Michael Brecker (later known as the Brecker Brothers). Other prominent band members included guitarist John Abercrombie, trombonist Barry Rogers, guitarist Bob Mann (who later joined Mountain) and bassist Will Lee.

One of the principal differences between Dreams and most other brass-infused bands was Dream's emphasis on spontaneity. The horn section would "work up spontaneous arrangements by jamming, always leaving them wide open to interpretations from night to night."

Dreams contributed to the soundtrack of the cult 1974 film, The Groove Tube, with their theme for the "Dealers" skit.

It is possible that comments regarding the dreams that fall later in the development may be such that the dreamer may not wish to be identified with them.

As an extension of this principle, Jeremy sees in dreams the healing magic we so desperately need today to deliver us from racism, sexism and every other form of tyranny and exploitation, including war itself.

His aim throughout this book is to show that when we establish conscious contact with our inner resources of creativity by understanding and listening to our dreams, fear and alienation give place to growth and compassion.

One of my special hopes for this book is that it will find a hearing in the churches, where dreams are still widely dismissed as meaningless rambles, or seen only in terms of prophesying the future.

How he ever finds the time to allow all members of his groups to work on their dreams in this way I shall never know.

For the past four hundred years or so, dreams and dreaming have had a very bad reputation among Western intellectuals.

In general, educated people have tended to dismiss dreams as either unimportant or totally meaningless.

A survey of these various traditions and a comparison of historical recorded dreams with our own dreams in the present moment show that dreams speak a universal language of metaphor and symbol.

The transformative power of dreams is inherent, and this power can be nurtured, developed, and enhanced dramatically by turning conscious attentions to dreams and working with them, either alone, or in company with others.

We started sharing our dreams with each other and our close friends many years ago for the interest and pleasure of it.

And not only the dreams but the associations which the act of transcribing them induced.

None of this exciting work with dreams can begin, however, until they are first recalled.

I believe that the primary reason for this general lack of dream recall in most people is simply the modern prejudices against dreams which have already been mentioned.

When these prejudices are overcome, when we make the step of deciding that we do actually care about our dreams and what they are saying, there is usually a marked increase in dream recall.

Thus it is important to follow up on the initial decision to remember dreams with some practical action to record them.
