I believe that the primary reason for this general lack of dream recall in most people is simply the modern prejudices against dreams which have already been mentioned.

When these prejudices are overcome, when we make the step of deciding that we do actually care about our dreams and what they are saying, there is usually a marked increase in dream recall.

Thus it is important to follow up on the initial decision to remember dreams with some practical action to record them.
