ZEN (Palermo)

Zona Espansione Nord, also known as ZEN or San Filippo Neri, is an economically deprived quarter on the northern outskirts of Palermo, Sicily. It is located in the VII municipality and has a population of around 16,000 people. It was constructed in 1969, under the design by architect Vittorio Gregotti, and it consists of bleak, multi-storied housing projects, most of which are in a state of dilapidation. As a result of rampant unemployment, poverty, high school drop-out rate and marginalization of the residents, ZEN has become notorious for its crime, juvenile delinquency, and social degradation. The architect Massimiliano Fuksas proposed its demolition, together with other similar structures in Italy, such as the Corviale in Rome.

In 1997, ZEN changed its name to San Filippo Neri, but most Palermitans refer to it by its former name. Italian director Marco Risi used ZEN as the setting for his 1990 film Ragazzi fuori, which depicted the social problems and lack of opportunities faced by the unemployed youth of ZEN.

Zen

Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in China during the Tang dynasty as Chan Buddhism. It was strongly influenced by Taoism, and developed as a distinguished school of Chinese Buddhism. From China, Chan Buddhism spread south to Vietnam, northeast to Korea and east to Japan, where it became known as Japanese Zen.

Zen emphasizes rigorous self-control, meditation-practice, insight into Buddha-nature, and the personal expression of this insight in daily life, especially for the benefit of others. As such, it de-emphasizes mere knowledge of sutras and doctrine and favors direct understanding through zazen and interaction with an accomplished teacher.

The teachings of Zen include various sources of Mahayana thought, especially Yogachara, the Tathāgatagarbha sūtras and the Huayan school, with their emphasis on Buddha-nature, totality, and the Bodhisattva-ideal. The Prajñāpāramitā literature and, to a lesser extent, Madhyamaka have also been influential in the shaping of the "paradoxical language" of the Zen-tradition.

It stars Rufus Sewell and Caterina Murino and is based on the Aurelio Zen detective novels by Michael Dibdin. The series was filmed on location in Italy, but the dialogue is in English. The series, which comprises three 90-minute films, was broadcast in the United Kingdom on Sunday evenings from 2 January 2011 on BBC One. The three films were based on the books Vendetta, Cabal and Ratking. The series was cancelled by BBC One in February 2011; BBC One controller Danny Cohen later said there were already enough male crime-fighters on TV. Left Bank, the show's producer, tried to find other broadcasters to fund another series but were unsuccessful.

Zen (microarchitecture)

Zen is the codename for an upcoming computer processor microarchitecture from AMD, expected for release in early 2017. Designed from scratch rather than being an overhaul of AMD's long-standing Bulldozer architecture, the 14 nm architecture and its new AM4 socket will be the basis of the upcoming generation of AMD's high-end CPUs codenamed "Summit Ridge" with availability starting in 2017. Zen derived Opteron server processors are expected in the second quarter of 2017, and Zen based APUs are expected to follow in the second half of 2017.

While the series of "Bristol Ridge" APUs, released in May 2016, was one last iteration of the Bulldozer architecture, it already utilized the AM4 socket, embracing DDR4 support. With the creation of Zen, the differences and issues present with previous sockets were removed due to Zen being more SoC-like in nature, making it possible to integrate a wide array of components and controllers (which would previously differentiate sockets) into the processors themselves, removing the need for different types of motherboards and sockets to support them and instead allowing Zen chips to be unified under a single AM4 socket.
