Vanguard (rocket)

The Vanguard rocket was intended to be the first launch vehicle the United States would use to place a satellite into orbit. Instead, the Sputnik crisis caused by the surprise launch of Sputnik 1 led the U.S., after the failure of Vanguard TV3, to quickly orbit the Explorer 1 satellite using a Juno I rocket, making Vanguard I the second successful U.S. orbital launch.

Vanguard rockets were used by Project Vanguard from 1957 to 1959. Of the eleven Vanguard rockets which the project attempted to launch, three successfully placed satellites into orbit. Vanguard rockets were an important part of the space race between the USA and the Soviet Union.

Vanguard (microkernel)

Vanguard is a discontinued experimental microkernel developed at Apple Computer in the early 1990s. Based on the V-System, Vanguard introduced standardized object identifiers and a unique "message chaining" system for improved performance. Vanguard was not used in any of Apple's commercial products, and development ended in 1997 when Apple's research group (ATG) was dismantled.

The vanguard (also called the advance guard) is the leading part of an advancing military formation. It has a number of functions, including seeking out the enemy and securing ground in advance of the main force.

is a 1981 arcade game developed by TOSE, and published by SNK in Japan in 1981 and later during the same year in Germany by the same publisher, while it was licensed to Centuri for manufacture in North America in October 1981 and by Zaccaria in Italy during the same year, putting SNK on the map in those regions. The game was also licensed to Cinematronics for conversion to cocktail arcade cabinets in North America.

The game is one of the first scrolling shooters with scrolling in multiple directions. It is also the first color game released by SNK and an early example of a dual-control game, similar to the later Robotron: 2084, but using four directional buttons rather than a second joystick.

Vanguard was followed up by a less successful sequel, Vanguard II, which has gameplay similar to Xevious with the ability to fly in multiple directions. There were no home console nor computer ports of Vanguard II released until SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 0 for the Sony PlayStation Portable.

Vanguard (synthesizer)

Vanguard is a VSTi and AU software synthesizer by German independent publisher reFX.

Released in 2004, it is a virtual analog synthesizer with three oscillators, 32 waveforms, up to 10-times unison, a filter with a number of frequency responses, delay and reverb effects and stereo pattern controlled noise gate and arpeggiator, making this plugin useful among the electronic dance music producers. Most functions can be automated, such as cutoff frequencies, resonance, ADSR, and LFO. Vanguard works with any VST-capable host and features the Trancegate and Arpeggiator tools. The audio engine and a part of the factory sounds from Vanguard were programmed by Markus Krause from Tone2 Audiosoftware.

This synthesizer is used by many electronic dance music producers, however is not as prevalent as reFX's Nexus 2 ROM plugin. Nexus2 is so called because it replaced the upgraded 2007 package for Vanguard called "Nexus ROM" in early 2008.

Vanguard (Image Comics)

Vanguard is a fictional alien hero created by Gary Carlson and Erik Larsen for Carlson's self-published anthology Megaton. Vanguard is a white alien with small antennae who has been given the unenviable job of guarding Earth, which is viewed by the aliens as boring with little chance of anything happening. His sole companion is a sarcastic, hovering cycloptic robot and their morphing androids, though he quickly developed a relationship with a reporter Roxanne Wells.

Following Larsen's departure from Marvel Comics and co-founding of Image Comics he and Carlson re-tooled the character slightly and re-introduced him as a part of Larsen's Savage Dragon's universe of which he was a close part, via Image he received two mini-series, Vanguard and Vanguard: Strange Visitors and a 1-shot but frequently appeared in Savage Dragon, Freak Force and the third volume of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as well being a member of Rob Liefeld's short-lived re-vamp of Brigade before Leifeld's expulsion.

Vanguard: A Libertarian Communist Journal was a monthly anarchist political and theoretical journal, based in New York City, published between April 1932 and July 1939, and edited by Samuel Weiner, among others.

Vanguard began as a project of the Vanguard Group, composed of members of the editorial collective of the Road to Freedom newspaper, as well as members of the Friends of Freedom group. Its initial subtitle was "An Anarchist Youth Publication", but changed to "A Libertarian Communist Journal " after issue 1.

Within several issues Vanguard would become a central sounding board for the international anarchist movement, including reports of developments during the Spanish Revolution as well as movement reports by Augustin Souchy and Emma Goldman.

Vanguard is a television documentary series that was broadcast on the now defunct Current TV television network. Vanguard reported on such issues as the environment, drugs, and the effects of globalization and conflict.

The focus of most Vanguard episodes is to explore and immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven reporting, the show’s correspondents conduct interviews with affected peoples and the regions involved usually being led by a guide and translator who facilitates access. Since Vanguard's subject matter often involved exposés about organized crime, drug trafficking and armed revolts, the correspondents can face significant danger because of their reporting due to unstable political or security situations.

Vanguard has received some of the media industry’s highest honors for journalism, including the 69th Annual Peabody Award, given for excellence in electronic media, and the 2010 Television Academy Honor, which recognizes "achievements in programming that present issues of concern to our society in a compelling, emotional and insightful way." Vanguard has also been awarded the 2009 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and the 2009 Livingston Award, and has been nominated four times for a News and Documentary Emmy Award and also for a Sports Emmy Award.

Vice president of the Vanguard journalism unit Laura Ling and her colleague Euna Lee were detained in North Korea after they allegedly crossed into North Korea from the People's Republic of China without a visa. They were subsequently pardoned after former U.S. President Bill Clinton flew to North Korea to meet with Kim Jong-il. They were producing a piece for Vanguard at the time of their detainment as shown in a Vanguard episode titled "Captive in North Korea".

In April 2012 Current announced that it would produce six new episodes of Vanguard. However, according to their own Facebook Page, apparently only two episodes were created in season 6 before the Vanguard series was ended, falling 4 episodes short of their originally announced plan. Vanguard (Nigeria)

The Vanguard is a daily newspaper published by Vanguard Media, based in Lagos, Nigeria.

Vanguard Media was established in 1983 by veteran journalist Sam Amuka-Pemu with three friends. The paper has an online edition. The newspaper is one of the few in Nigeria that is considered independent of political control, the others being Thisday, The Punch, The Sun and The Guardian. In June 1990, the paper was briefly suspended by Col. Raji Rasaki, Military Governor of Lagos State.

In December 2008 the US-based Pointblanknews.com published a story that alleged the wife of the publisher of Vanguard Newspapers was involved in a ritual killing. The Vanguard took the reporter to court, claiming he was attempting extortion. In December 2009, a Niger Delta peace activist commended Vanguard Newspapers for its reporting on the government's intentions, which he said helped persuade the militants to accept amnesty.

Vanguard (magazine)

Vanguard was a periodical produced in Vancouver, British Columbia from 1972 to 1989, containing reviews and critical articles on Canadian art and artists. The magazine was successor to the Vancouver Art Gallery Bulletin which existed between 1933 and 1971. It was published monthly by the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1972 to 1984. The first issue of Vanguard appeared in January 1972. In February 1979 it was redesigned as a glossy magazine and its coverage expanded to include national art events. The magazine was published by the Vancouver Society for Critical Arts Publications from 1985 to 1989, when it ceased publication. Full holdings can be found at the Vancouver Art Gallery library.

Vanguard (band)

Vanguard is a Finnish metal band from Helsinki. It was formed in 1999 by J.Grym and has released two international albums, Succumbra (2005), Hydralchemy (2007) and one demo Cestrum Nocturnum (2004).

The band got its first record deal by winning the Metal Battle band competition held at the Wacken Open Air metal festival in Germany in 2004. They also performed there the next year.

Vanguard's producer/drummer Tonmi Lillman died in 2012 leaving the band's third record incomplete.

The band has made no statement to break up and radio host Klaus Flaming from Radio Rock recently told on air during a memorial show to Tonmi Lillman that the band was working to finish its third album with a new line-up.

This was later corroborated by the band's vocalist J.Grym on their MySpace page (citing the reason to do it there because the band had not built its new web presence yet).
