A valerate compound is a salt or ester of valeric acid. It is also known as pentanoate. The valerate ion is CHCOO ( valeric acid minus one hydrogen ion).
Many steroid-based pharmaceuticals, for example ones based on betamethasone or hydrocortisone, include the steroid as the valerate ester.

If allowed to stand in a test tube, the odor of valeric aldehyde will first be noticed, then that of amyl valerate, and lastly that of valeric acid.
