Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils most commonly caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Symptoms may include sore throat and fever.
It is frequently caused by a viral infection. When caused by a bacterium group A streptococcus, it is typically referred to as strep throat. It is a type of pharyngitis. Diagnosis may be by doing a throat swab.
The majority of people recover completely, with or without medication. In 40% of people, symptoms will resolve in three days, and in 85%, symptoms will resolve within one week, regardless of whether streptococcal infection is present or not.
