Los Angeles (, Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County. Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over .

Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.

The city is the focal point of the larger Los Angeles metropolitan area and the Greater Los Angeles Area region, which contain 13 million and over 18 million people, respectively, , making it one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world as well as the second-largest in the United States. Los Angeles is the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populated county in the United States. The city's inhabitants are referred to as Angelenos.

Nicknamed the "City of Angels", Los Angeles is a global city with a diverse economy in entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine and research. It has been ranked sixth in the Global Cities Index and 9th Global Economic Power Index. The city is home to renowned institutions covering a broad range of professional and cultural fields and is one of the most substantial economic engines within the United States. Los Angeles is the debut album of the American punk rock band X, released on April 26, 1980. Produced by ex- Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek, it includes a cover of the 1967 Doors song " Soul Kitchen" featuring Manzarek on keyboards. It placed at number 16 for the year in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop Critics Poll. In 2003, the album was ranked number 286 on the Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

"Los Angeles" is a single written and performed by Black Francis, it was the first track on his solo debut album Frank Black, released in 1992. It served as the main theme song for the short lived but cult phenomenon VH1 talk show Late World with Zach. It was also featured in the soundtrack of Tony Hawk's American Wasteland as well as being featured in Yeah Right, a skateboarding video directed by Spike Jonze with professional skateboarder Eric Koston skating to this song. Also, a music video was made for this song featuring Black himself. The music video was featured on an episode of MTV's Beavis and Butt-head.

Los Angeles (meteorite)

The Los Angeles Meteorite is a martian meteorite fallen in California's Mohave Desert. It was found around 1980 by Bob Verish and consists of two stones of and . Following analysis at the University of California, Los Angeles. Vernish stored the meteorites in his rock collection before examining the find again on October 30, 1999 when he recognized it as a meteorite. He removed small samples for analysis by Alan Rubin at UCLA. By January 12, analysis confirmed the meteorite to be of Martian origin, similar to QUE 94201 found in the Antarctic in 1994.

Analysis at the time noted that the meteorite was "in many respects was the most geochemically evolved sample yet discovered from Mars." A 2000 paper in the journal Geology described the meteorite as being "more differentiated, with higher concentrations of incompatible elements (e.g., La) and a higher abundance of late-stage phases such as phosphates and K-rich feldspathic glass" than previous Martian meteorites such as Shergotty and Zagami meteorites.
