lead oxide

minium \min"i*um\ (?; 277), n. [L. minium, an Iberian word, the Romans getting all their cinnabar from Spain; cf. Basque armine['a].] (Chem.) A heavy, brilliant red pigment, consisting of an oxide of lead, Pb3O4, obtained by exposing lead or massicot to a gentle and continued heat in the air. It is used as a cement, as a paint, and in the manufacture of flint glass. Called also red lead, lead tetroxide, lead orthoplumbate, mineral orange, mineral red, Paris red, Saturn red, and less definitively, lead oxide.

Wikipedia
Lead(II) oxide

Lead(II) oxide, also called lead monoxide, is the inorganic compound with the molecular formula Pb O. PbO occurs in two polymorphs, one litharge having a tetragonal crystal structure and the other massicot having an orthorhombic crystal structure. Modern applications for PbO are mostly in lead-based industrial glass and industrial ceramics, including computer components.

Lead(II,IV) oxide

Lead(II,IV) oxide, also called minium, red lead or triplumbic tetroxide, is a bright red or orange crystalline or amorphous pigment. Chemically, red lead is PbO, or 2 PbO·PbO. PbO,is [2PbO].[PbO] or Lead(II,IV) oxide. It is used in the manufacture of batteries, lead glass and rust-proof primer paints.

Lead oxide

Lead oxides are a group of inorganic compounds with formulas including lead (Pb) and oxygen (O).

Common lead oxides include:

  • Lead(II) oxide, PbO, litharge, massicot
  • Lead(II,IV) oxide, PbO, minium, red lead
  • Lead dioxide (lead(IV) oxide), PbO

Less common lead oxides are:

  • Lead(II,IV) oxide, PbO, lead sesquioxide
  • PbO (monoclinic, dark-brown or black crystals)
  • The so-called black lead oxide, which is a mixture of PbO and fine-powdered metal Pb and used in the production of lead acid batteries.
