Joseph (disambiguation)

Joseph is a masculine given name.

Joseph may also refer to:

Joseph (Genesis)

Joseph (; , Standard Yosef Tiberian Yôsēp̄; Yūsuf or Yūsif; Iōsēph) is an important figure in the Bible's Book of Genesis and also in the Quran. Sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, he rose to become vizier, the second most powerful man in Egypt next to Pharaoh, where his presence and office caused Israel to leave Canaan and settle in Egypt. The composition of the story can be dated to the period between the 7th century BCE and the third quarter of the 5th, which is roughly the period to which scholars date the Book of Genesis.

Joseph (Book of Mormon)

In the Book of Mormon, Joseph (; Hebrew יוסף Yôsēp̄; Arabic يوسف Yūsuf) is a priest, and a younger brother of the Prophets Nephi and Jacob.

Joseph (comics)

Joseph is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was briefly a member of the X-Men. Created by writer Scott Lobdell and artist Roger Cruz, he first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #327 (December 1995).

Joseph is a clone of the X-Men’s nemesis Magneto, possessing his magnetic powers, though he was originally intended to be an amnesiac Magneto. He had a brief courtship with Rogue before dying in battle with the actual Magneto. Joseph is later revived by Astra.

Joseph (Khazar)

Joseph ben Aaron was king of the Khazars during the 950s and 960s. Joseph was the son of Aaron II, a Khazar ruler who defeated a Byzantine-inspired war against Khazaria on numerous fronts. Joseph's wife (or probably, one of many wives) was the daughter of the king of the Alans.

Whether Joseph was the Khagan or the Bek of the Khazars is contested among historians. He describes leading Khazar armies which seems to imply the role of the Bek. However, as he does not refer to a co-ruler in his writings, it is possible that by his time the two-king system had been abandoned altogether. (see Khazar Kingship).

Joseph actively sought contact with Jews elsewhere in the diaspora. He corresponded with Hasdai ibn Shaprut, a rabbi in Cordoba, and invited him to settle in Khazaria. He is also mentioned in the Schechter Letter.

Joseph was involved in wars against the Kievan Rus and the Pechenegs, as well as sporadic fighting with the Byzantines in the Crimea. He reported that he was allied with the Muslim states around the Caspian Sea against Varangian marauders from Rus' and Scandinavia.

Joseph's ultimate fate is unknown. As the destruction of the Khazar empire by Sviatoslav I of Kiev occurred soon after his correspondence with Hasdai (in 967 or 969), it is possible that Joseph was ruler during the Khaganate's collapse.

Joseph (film)

The Bible: Joseph is a 1995 German/Italian/American television film about the life of Joseph from the Old Testament. It aired on TNT and was filmed in Morocco.

Joseph (Petrovykh)

Metropolitan Joseph (secular name Ivan Semyonovich Petrovykh, ; 15 December 1872 – 20 November 1937) was a metropolitan of Russian Orthodox Church.

Metropolitan of Leningrad 1926-1927, after the publication in 1927 the "Declaraton" by Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) he led Josephites movement.

He was born in the Novgorod province in the area of Tikhvin city of Ustyuzhna.

He was against the recognition of the Soviet government by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1927–1937. He was a leader of the resistance movement and organizer of the Catacomb Church.

Before he was killed by the "Soviets", Metropolitan Joseph wrote: "Do not judge me so severely, and clearly understand the following: 1. I am not at all a schismatic, and I call not to a schism. but to the purification of the Church from those who sow real schism and provoke it. 2. To indicate to another his errors and wrongs is not schism but, to speak simply, it is putting an unbridled horse back into harness. 3. The refusal to accept sound reproaches and directives is in reality a schism and a trampling on the truth. 4. In the construction of ecclesiastical life the participants are not only those at the head, but the whole body of the Church, and a schismatic is he who assumes to himself rights which exceed his authority and in the name of the Church presumes to say that which is not shared by his colleagues. 5. Metropolitan Sergius has shown himself to be such a schismatic, for he has far exceeded his authority and has rejected and scorned the voice of many hierarchs, in whose midst the pure truth has been preserved".

He was killed by the Soviet government in 1937 under Chikment, Kazakhstan.

In 1981, Metropolitan Joseph was glorified as a New Martyr by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, but his glorification has not been recognized by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Joseph

"Joseph" is a masculine given name originating from Hebrew, recorded in the Hebrew Bible, as יוֹסֵף, Standard Hebrew Yossef, Tiberian Hebrew and Aramaic Yôsēp̄. The name can be translated from Hebrew יהוה להוסיף YHWH Lhosif as signifying " Yahweh will increase/add".

In the Old Testament, Joseph is Jacob's eleventh son and Rachel's first ( Yossef ben- Yaakov in the Jewish Bible). In the New Testament, Joseph is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus. In the New Testament there is another Joseph as well, Joseph of Arimathea, a secret disciple of Jesus who supplied the tomb in which Jesus was buried.

The form "Joseph" is used mostly in English, French and German-speaking countries. In Arabic, including in the Qur'an, the name is spelled يوسف or Yūsuf. The name has enjoyed significant popularity in its many forms in numerous countries, and Joseph was one of the two names, along with Robert, to have remained in the top 10 boys' names list in the US from 1925 to 1972. It is especially common in contemporary Israel, as either "Yossi" or "Yossef", and in Italy, where the name "Giuseppe" was the most common male name in the 20th century.

Joseph (opera)

Joseph (also known as Joseph en Égypte) is an opéra comique in three acts by the French composer Étienne Méhul. The libretto, by Alexandre Duval, is based on the Biblical story of Joseph and his brothers. The work was first performed by the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 17 February 1807 at the Théâtre Feydeau. It mixes musical numbers with spoken dialogue and is described in both the libretto and the printed announcement for the opening night as a "drame en trois actes, mêlé de chant", although the Méhul scholar Elizabeth Bartlet catalogues it as an "opéra en prose".

His own class of 1755, numbering twenty-seven, was put under the tutorship of Joseph Mayhew, who taught Latin, and for Adams the four years were a time out of time that passed all too swiftly.

As the Caledonian savages danced through that long-gone night, a thousand years, perhaps, before the prototypes of Joseph Smith, John Alexander Dowie and Aimee Semple Mc-Pherson envisaged the Star of Bethlehem, a new sun looked down upon the distant land of the Athapascans and another scene--American Indian savages.

This is the Babinski reflex, named for a French neurologist, Joseph F.

Pierre Marie, then Joseph Babinski and Georges Gilles de la Tourette, walked silently onto the stage in their long white aprons.

My depiction of the Salpetriere at that time is as close to the reality as I can make it, and the various disciples of Charcot, including Georges Gilles de la Tourette, Pierre Marie and Joseph Babinski, existed as described, as did Mile Cottard and Blanche Wittmann.
