Griffin \Grif"fin\, Griffon \Grif"fon\, n. [OE. griffin, griffon, griffoun, F. griffon, fr. L. gryphus, equiv to gryps, Gr. ?; -- so called because of the hooked beak, and akin to grypo`s curved, hook-nosed.]

  1. (Myth.) A fabulous monster, half lion and half eagle. It is often represented in Grecian and Roman works of art.

  2. (Her.) A representation of this creature as an heraldic charge.

  3. (Zo["o]l.) A species of large vulture ( Gyps fulvus) found in the mountainous parts of Southern Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor; -- called also gripe, and grype. It is supposed to be the ``eagle'' of the Bible. The bearded griffin is the lammergeir. [Written also gryphon.]

Gryphon (band)

Gryphon are a British progressive rock band formed in the 1970s, best known for their unusual medieval and Renaissance sound and instrumentation. The band briefly flourished in the progressive rock heyday of the early 1970s, and then retired to other musical activities before reforming for a one-off reunion in 2009. Recently the band has confirmed further concerts in 2015, including new music.

The Gryphon is a military wingpack that currently allows paratroopers to exit an aircraft at an altitude of 10 kilometres, then fly 40 kilometres while carrying up to 100 pounds of equipment. The system is still in development and the goal, according to Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH (Electronic System and Logistics Group or ESG), is to allow paratroopers to fly up to 200 kilometres, thus enabling them to penetrate enemy airspace without compromising the safety of the aircraft or being detected by radar.

Gryphon also known as Attack of the Gryphon is a 2007 television film directed by Andrew Prowse, starring Amber Benson, Jonathan LaPaglia, and Larry Drake. It premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel on January 27, 2007.

The made for TV movie continues a tradition of science fiction movies featuring computer-animated monsters that have been part of the Sci-Fi Pictures original films series since its inception in 2002. These include Sabertooth (2002), Rottweiler (2004), Mansquito (2005), Hammerhead: Shark Frenzy (2005), Pterodactyl (2005), Minotaur (2006), and Mammoth (2006).

Gryphon (album)

Gryphon is the debut album by the progressive rock band Gryphon. It was originally released in 1973 by Transatlantic, catalogue number TRA 262.

The album was produced by Lawrence Aston and Adam Skeaping and engineered by Adam Skeaping and Nick Glennie-Smith. It was recorded at Riverside Recordings and Livingston Studios. The gryphon cover illustration is by Dan Pearce.

The emphasis on this album is still very much on the acoustic and 'early music' instruments.
