What is "ground out"

Out \Out\ (out), n.

1. One who, or that which, is out; especially, one who is out of office; -- generally in the plural.

Ground out may refer to:

• In baseball rules, when a batted ball hits the ground in fair territory, but a defensive player is able to gain possession of the ball and touch first base before the batter-runner arrives.
• In electrical power, an electrical short-circuit to earth, either intentional or accidental. This term is more commonly found as a US colloquialism in comparison to the British term "short out".

A ground out is a method of putting out a batter in baseball.
