Ghost Stories (The Lawrence Arms album)

Ghost Stories is a punk rock album by the Chicago, Illinois band The Lawrence Arms, released in 2000 by Asian Man Records. It was the band's second full-length album. With this release the band moved away from the political nature of some of their previous songs in favor of more introspective lyrics. Also, while singer/bassist Brendan Kelly had handled the majority of lead vocals on their previous album A Guided Tour of Chicago, on this album he and singer/guitarist Chris McCaughan split vocal duties almost equally. This singing style would continue throughout their next several albums, and eventually the two would begin to share lead vocals in an almost duet style.

Two of the album's tracks, "Turnstyles" and "The Old Timer's 2x4" were later re-recorded for the 2005 b-sides compilation album Cocktails & Dreams. All three hidden tracks were also re-released on that album. "Purple Haze" was later rewritten and re-recorded for the Shady View Terrace / The Lawrence Arms split EP as "Faintly Falling Ashes."

The album debuted at #2 on the Canadian Albums Chart making it Chantal Kreviazuk's highest charting album of her career. Less than a month later the album was certified Gold by the CRIA.

On March 9, 2007, the album was released on the iTunes Store as Ghost Stories (With Interview Tracks), including additional songs and about 30 minutes of interviews with Kreviazuk.

Ghost Stories (play)

Ghost Stories is a play written by Jeremy Dyson (of The League Of Gentlemen) and Andy Nyman (best known for his work with psychological illusionist Derren Brown). It premiered at the Liverpool Playhouse in February 2010 before being transferred for a longer run at the Lyric Hammersmith in London. It then transferred to the Duke of York's Theatre in the West End where it played from June 2010 to July 2011. The show re-opened at the Arts Theatre in February 2014 and is scheduled to be running until January 2015.

The play is notable for running only 80 minutes (with no interval) and for its publicised warnings advising against anyone under the age of 15 attending. The marketing of the show outside the theatre is unusual in that there are no production photographs, just stills and video monitors showing the shocked reactions of audience members. An announcement at the end of the play asks the audience to "keep the secrets of Ghost Stories" so that new audiences do not have the experience spoiled with any prior information about the play.

I believe we are making a record that will retain what is the main essence of Silent Civilian, but maturing greatly pushing forward." Speaking about the darker themed lyrics, Santos explained "I went from being in a pretty solid relationship, having a house and a wife to sleeping on the recording studio floor and losing it all. I was in a really dark place when writing the lyrics to this record. I had a lot of animosity to certain people in my life at the time and it just reflected through my writing."

The album debuted at #21 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, moving roughly 1,600 copies during its first week of release.

The first single to be released off the album was "Last One Standing". The video depicts the band playing amid scenes of soldiers fighting and being attacked in a Middle Eastern environment, along with flashes of a suburban home-life. The video was shot by director Scott Hansen, who has previously worked with A Day to Remember, Alesana and A Skylit Drive.

Ghost Stories (magazine)

Ghost Stories was a pulp magazine which published 64 issues between 1926 and 1932. It was one of the earliest competitors to Weird Tales, the first magazine to specialize in the fantasy and occult fiction genre. It was a companion magazine to True Story and True Detective Stories, and focused almost entirely on stories about ghosts, with many of the stories written by staff writers but presented under pseudonyms in a "true confession" style. These were often accompanied by faked photographs to make the stories appear more believable. Ghost Stories also ran original and reprinted contributions, including works by Robert E. Howard, Carl Jacobi, and Frank Belknap Long. Among the reprints were Agatha Christie's "The Last Seance" (under the title "The Woman Who Stole a Ghost"), several stories by H.G. Wells, and Charles Dickens' " The Signalman". The magazine was initially successful, but began to lose readers, and in 1930 was sold to Harold Hersey. Hersey was unable to reverse the magazine's decline, and Ghost Stories ceased publication at the start of 1932.

Usage examples of "ghost stories".

There are so many ghost stories from all around the world, how can ghosts not be real?

I've read plenty of ghost stories, and I've read the book by Charles Fort that Dad has in the library.

Dad told some pretty scroggy ghost stories while he roasted some fish.

When I was a boy I used to be extraordinarily fond of ghost stories, I remember, but even while reading them I always had an uneasy suspicion that when it came to the necessary detail of explaining the mystery I should be defrauded with some subterfuge as 'by an ingenious arrangement of hidden wires the artful Muggles had contrived,' etc.

If these were made of white kid gloves, stuffed, the idea, at least, was borrowed from ghost stories, in which ghostly hands, with no visible bodies, are not unusual.
