Firefly (TV series)

Firefly is an American space Western drama television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon, under his Mutant Enemy Productions label. Whedon served as an executive producer, along with Tim Minear. The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Whedon pitched the show as "nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things".

The show explores the lives of a group of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and others who now make a living on the fringe of society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In this future, the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures. According to Whedon's vision, "nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today".

Firefly premiered in the U.S. on the Fox network on September 20, 2002. By mid-December, Firefly had averaged 4.7 million viewers per episode and was 98th in Nielsen ratings. It was canceled after eleven of the fourteen produced episodes were aired. Despite the relatively short life span of the series, it received strong sales when it was released on DVD and has large fan support campaigns. It won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2003 for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series. TV Guide ranked the series at No. 5 on their 2013 list of 60 shows that were "Cancelled Too Soon".

The post-airing success of the show led Whedon and Universal Pictures to produce Serenity, a 2005 film which continues from the story of the series, and the Firefly franchise expanded to other media, including comics and a role-playing game.

Firefly (dinghy)

The Firefly is a two-sail, one design, wooden or GRP sailing dinghy with no spinnaker, designed by Uffa Fox in 1938. The first four boats from the production line were named Fe, Fi, Fo and Fum. Number one, Fe, is now owned by the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. Although designed as a double hander, it was selected as the single handed class for the 1948 Olympics but was subsequently replaced by the Finn class. The class then became popular as a low cost, one design, double hander, as was originally intended, tolerating remarkably well combined weights of 16 to 25 stone (102 to 159 kg).

The Firefly class today has a thriving open events calendar in the UK. The national championships are always held at a sea venue and attracts a very high level of dinghy racing competitors in boats of all ages from all over the country and fleets of 60 entries plus. Away events are held at a number of the top end sailing clubs in the UK including Restonguet, Itchenor, West Kirby, Felixstowe Ferry, Southport, Budworth and Rickmansworth. It has become particularly successful as a team racing boat in the UK, thanks to its high manoeuvrability, easy handling, and low cost. Another benefit is the use of smaller mainsail which enables sailing in stronger winds. The class has become particularly popular for the British Universities Sailing Association team racing events and is used in similar BSDRA events, thus a large number of universities and schools that team race have a fleet of Fireflys, taking advantage of the benefits above.

The Firefly ideal was to produce a one-design dinghy at a low cost; this is why the class celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2006 and continues to grow. The Firefly appeals to all ages and is raced by both men and women. A more detailed history will be found on the class association website.

Bassist Trevor Bolder made his Uriah Heep debut on this album. Barring a break of about 18 months in the early 1980s, he remained with the group until his death in 2013.

Firefly (TNT album)

Firefly is the sixth studio album by the Norwegian hard rock band TNT. It was released in 1997.

The album was a comeback for TNT who split up in 1992 after the release of Realized Fantasies. It also marked a significant change in TNT's sound and is still heavily debated among the fans of the band. The music is more heavy and modern, reflecting the changes in the music business in the first half of the 1990s. It is also Tony Harnell's favorite album. New singer Tony Mills was told by Le Tekrø in 2007 to not even bother listening to it as they would not play anything from the album live.

The album was not as successful as some of TNT's previous albums, but still achieved some success in Norway and Japan. The band toured those countries in support of the album.

Firefly (computer program)

Firefly, formerly known as PC GAMESS, is an ab initio computational chemistry program for Intel-compatible x86, x86-64 processors based on GAMESS (US) sources. However, it has been substantially rewritten (about 60-70% of the code), especially in platform-specific parts ( memory allocation, disk input/output, network), mathematic functions (e.g., matrix operations), and quantum chemical methods (such as Hartree–Fock, Møller–Plesset perturbation theory, and density functional theory). Therefore, it is significantly faster than the original GAMESS. The main maintainer of the program is Alex Granovsky. Since October 2008 the project is no longer associated with GAMESS (US) and the Firefly name was created. Until October 17, 2009 both names could be used but thereafter the package should be referred to as Firefly exclusively.

As of December 4, 2009, the support of any PC GAMESS versions earlier than the first PC GAMESS/Firefly version 7.1.C is being abandoned (and any and all licenses to use the code are revoked). Therefore, users of the outdated PC GAMESS binaries (version 7.1.B and all earlier releases) are required to discontinue their use of the PC GAMESS and upgrade to Firefly.

A state of the art edition of Firefly has been launched as Firefly v. 8.0.0 RC on July 25, 2012 for public beta testing. A relative comparison has shown that it is much faster and reliable than its previous edition Firefly v. 7.1.G. Many changes have been made to enhance its capabilities.

A review by Allmusic called it an example of bop bordering on hard bop sound. For the 1980s it would not be considered very "groundbreaking", but the album sounded like it could have come out of the height of the bop era in the 1960s.
