Draco (lawgiver)

Draco (; , Drakōn; fl. c. 7th century BC) was the first recorded legislator of Athens in Ancient Greece. He replaced the prevailing system of oral law and blood feud by a written code to be enforced only by a court. Draco was the first democratic legislator, being that he was requested by popularity by the Athenian citizens to be a lawgiver for the city-state, the citizens were fully unaware that Draco would come up with such harsh laws. Draco's written law became known for its harshness, with the adjective "draconian" referring to similarly unforgiving rules or laws.

Draco (constellation)

Draco is a constellation in the far northern sky. Its name is Latin for dragon. It was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, and remains one of the 88 modern constellations today. The north pole of the ecliptic is in Draco. Draco is circumpolar (that is, never setting), and can be seen all year from northern latitudes.

Draco (genus)

Draco is a genus of agamid lizards that also are known as flying dragons or gliding lizards. The ribs and their connecting membrane may be extended to create a wing, the hindlimbs are flattened and wing-like in cross-section, and a small set of flaps on the neck serve as a horizontal stabilizers. Draco are arboreal insectivores. While not capable of powered flight they often obtain lift in the course of their gliding flights. Glides as long as have been recorded, over which the animal loses only in height, which is quite some distance, considering that one of these lizards is only around in total length (tail included).

Draco (programming language)

Draco was a shareware programming language for CP/M and the Amiga, created by Chris Gray in the early 1980s, and discontinued sometime around 1990.

Draco, a blend of Pascal, C and ALGOL 68, was a strongly typed language most notable for its ability to produce small, optimized executables, and for the compiler's ability to work in very limited memory spaces. Gray himself used Draco for the Amiga to create a port of Peter Langston's game Empire.

Draco (military standard)

The draco ("dragon" or "serpent", plural dracontes) was a military standard of the Roman cavalry. Carried by the draconarius, the draco was the standard of the cohort as the eagle ( aquila) was that of the legion.

The draco may have been introduced to the Roman cavalry by Sarmatian units in the 2nd century . According to Vegetius, in the 4th century a draco was carried by each legionary cohort.

The dragon was originally a Dacian emblem. According to Fiebiger, the Romans adopted it from the Dacians, after their defeat or from the Parthians.

The name of the western constellation in modern Chinese is 天龍座 (tiān lóng zuò), meaning "the heaven dragon constellation".

Draco (physician)

Draco (or Dracon, ) was the name of several physicians in the family of Hippocrates.

  • Draco I. Lived 5th to 4th centuries BC, was the son of Hippocrates, the famous physician (Hippocrates II). He was the brother of Thessalus. Galen tells us that some of the writings of Hippocrates was attributed to his son Draco.
  • Draco II. According to the Suda, the son of Thessalus and grandson of Hippocrates II. He was the father of Hippocrates IV, and would have been the brother of Hippocrates III. He would have lived in the 4th century BC.
  • Draco III. According to the Suda, the son of Hippocrates IV.

There may, however, be some confusion in the Suda, and it is possible that these three physicians are not all distinct persons.

Draco (rocket engine family)

Draco is a family of hypergolic liquid rocket engines designed and built by SpaceX for use in their launch vehicles and space capsules. Two engines have been built to date: Draco and SuperDraco.

The original Draco thruster is a small rocket engine for use on the Dragon spacecraft,. These engines were also used on early Falcon 9 upper stages to provide attitude control, but more recent versions now use nitrogen cold gas thrusters in place of Dracos.

SuperDraco is derived from Draco, and utilizes the same storable (non-cryogenic) propellant as the small Draco thrusters, but are over 100 times larger in terms of delivered thrust. The much larger SuperDraco engines will be used on later versions of the Dragon spacecraft to provide launch-escape capability on crew transport flights to low Earth orbit, as well as entry, descent and landing control of the proposed Red Dragon robotic probe to Mars.
