Domino

Domino \Dom"i*no\, n.; pl. Dominos or (esp. the pieces for a game) Dominoes. [F. domino, or It. domin[`o], or Sp. domin['o], fr. L. dominus master. The domino was orig. a hood worn by the canons of a cathedral. See Don, Dame.]

  1. A kind of hood worn by the canons of a cathedral church; a sort of amice.
    --Kersey.

  2. A mourning veil formerly worn by women.

  3. A kind of mask; particularly, a half mask worn at masquerades, to conceal the upper part of the face. Dominos were formerly worn by ladies in traveling.

  5. A person wearing a domino.

  6. pl. A game played by two or more persons, with twenty-eight pieces of wood, bone, or ivory, of a flat, oblong shape, plain at the back, but on the face divided by a line in the middle, and either left blank or variously dotted after the manner of dice. The game is played by matching the spots or the blank of an unmatched half of a domino already played
    --Hoyle.

  7. One of the pieces with which the game of dominoes is played.
    --Hoyle.

fall like dominoes. To fall sequentially, as when one object in a line, by falling against the next object, causes it in turn to fall, and that second object causes a third to fall, etc.; the process can be repeated an indefinite number of times.

Note: The phrase is derived from an entertainment using dominoes arranged in a row, each standing on edge and therefore easily knocked over; when the first is made to fall against the next, it starts a sequence which ends when all have fallen. For amusement, people have arranged such sequences involving thousands of dominoes, arrayed in fanciful patterns.

Douglas Harper's Etymology Dictionary
domino

1801, from French domino (1771), perhaps (on comparison of the black tiles of the game) from the meaning "hood with a cloak worn by canons or priests" (1690s), from Latin dominus "lord, master" (see domain), but the connection is not clear. Klein thinks it might be directly from dominus, "because he who has first disposed his pieces becomes 'the master.' " Metaphoric use in geopolitics is from April 1954, first used by U.S. President Eisenhower in a "New York Times" piece, in reference to what happens when you set up a row of dominos and knock the first one down.

Domino (Squeeze album)

Domino is a 1998 album by the British new wave group Squeeze. It was the band's twelfth studio album. After a career struggling with various major record labels, the band decided to record and release Domino independently, on Glenn Tilbrook's own Quixotic Records. Core members Tilbrook and Chris Difford were joined by three brand new Squeeze members for this album: drummer Ashley Soan, bassist Hilaire Penda, and keyboardist Christopher Holland ( Jools's younger brother).

The album was hastily made, and received negative reactions from critics. Difford and Tilbrook have both since denounced Domino as a weak effort, marred by time constraints and increasing friction between the two songwriters. Following a 1999 tour during which Difford failed to show up for a single show (he blamed troubles with alcoholism and an increasing hatred of touring), Squeeze decided to call it quits. The album did not appear in the UK Albums Chart; their first to fail to do so.

The band's dislike of the album was highlighted when, after reforming in 2007, no tracks from Domino were performed during the band's UK and US tours until 2012 when "Without You Here" was played. The only other Squeeze album that did not feature at all in the post-2007 tours was Play.

Domino (car)

Domino is a general name for a range of kit car bodies originally produced by Fibretech GRP and distributed by Domino Cars (GB) Ltd. The assets of Fibretech were eventually transferred to Domino Composites which changed its name to Composite Designs and which finally went into liquidation at the end of 2007. Production is being continued by the DominoCars-Organisation which is a separate entity from any of the predecessors. The models are being re-engineered to incorporate modern safety features. They were intended originally for use with components from the classic Mini, but adapted in some cases for use as electric vehicles, and even in at least one case powered by steam. DominoCars-Organisation is currently developing a hybrid Diesel-electric powered unit to power the classic Mini-shaped vehicle as a town car.

The Domino range included until the 2007 liquidation the Pimlico, the Premier, the HT Saloon and Pick-up models, each designed to echo the design of the classic Mini, but with modifications necessary both because of their fiberglass construction, and due to licensing issues. The range to be continued (2008+) will include the Pimlico and the Saloon. Plans are being drawn for a hybrid-powered town car utilising the Domino shells.

The B-side of the " Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" single was the first half of this song, "In the Glow of the Night", while the B-side of " Invisible Touch" was the second part of the song, "The Last Domino".

During a clip titled "Tony talks about his inspiration" on the When in Rome 2007 DVD, Banks states that his inspiration for the song lyrics was the 1982 Lebanon War which was still being contested prior to the recording of Invisible Touch. Domino (rapper)

Shawn Antoine Ivy, known as Domino, is an American rapper born in 1972 in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Long Beach, California. Being a Crip himself, he auditioned for the Bloods & Crips project in the early 1990s. He is the first rapper, in order of appearance, in the title track Bangin' on Wax on the album of the same name. His debut album, Domino, spawned two major hits in the United States, including the Top 10 hit "Getto Jam", which reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Several further albums were released, and Domino continued to score hits on the R&B charts into the 2000s (decade).

In 1996, Domino appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation CD, America is Dying Slowly, alongside Biz Markie, Wu-Tang Clan, and Fat Joe, among many other prominent hip hop artists. The CD, meant to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic among African American men, was heralded as "a masterpiece" by the Source magazine.

While his self-titled debut album was critically and commercially well-received, many were quick to point out that his style was similar to that of fellow Long Beach resident and up-and-coming Dr. Dre protégé, Snoop Doggy Dogg. He is the first hip-hop artist to perform a No. 1 rap single which contained melodic hip-hop throughout the entire song. Three years later, Domino released his second album, Physical Funk, which failed to become as successful as its predecessor due to corporate moves. The video "Physical Funk" was a No. 1 video on MTV and the album was defected before its release due to Def Jam (Russell Simmons record label) dropping Outburst Records (the record label Domino was released on) before the album was released.

Domino (mathematics)

In mathematics, a domino is a polyomino of order 2, that is, a polygon in the plane made of two equal-sized squares connected edge-to-edge. When rotations and reflections are not considered to be distinct shapes, there is only one free domino.

Since it has reflection symmetry, it is also the only one-sided domino (with reflections considered distinct). When rotations are also considered distinct, there are two fixed dominoes: The second one can be created by rotating the one above by 90°.

A domino tiling is a covering of another polyomino with dominoes. These figure in several celebrated problems, including the Aztec diamond problem In which large diamond-shaped regions have a number of tilings equal to a power of two, with most tilings appearing random within a central circular region and having a more regular structure outside of this "arctic circle", and the mutilated chessboard problem, in which removing two opposite corners from a chessboard makes it impossible to tile with dominoes.

In a wider sense, the term domino is often understood to simply mean a tile of any shape.
