What is "bhagalpur"

Bhagalpur is situated on the southern banks of river Ganges in the Indian state of Bihar. It is the 2nd largest city in Bihar and is a major urban agglomerate in Bihar.It is one of the major educational, commercial and political centres in Bihar and Eastern india.

One of the latest national level recognitions for Bhagalpur is to get itself finalised under the list of Smart Cities the Central Government would develop very soon along with the help of local corporation.

The city was referred to as one of the largest trading centres in India by the 7th century Chinese travellers Xuanzang and Faxian. At that time the city had a large harbour at Champanagar, now known as Champanala on the Ganges which flows through the western boundary of the present city near Nathnagar. Many boats and coins of the Middle and Far East were collected during archaeological excavations carried out during the 1970s.

The silk industry in the city is the most prominent which is a practice being undertaken since hundreds of years old by the local artisans .Silkworms are employed to produce the very renowned Tussar Silk from which Tussar Saree is manufactured. Bhagalpur is thus known as the "Silk City". The silk manufactured in Bhagalpur is Known as "Ahimsa Silk". The Silk Institute and Agricultural University are located in the city. Other education facilities include the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur College of Engineering, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, T.N.B.Law College and Homeopathic colleges. In 2010, Bihar Agricultural University was set up in Sabour, Bhagalpur.

The Gangetic plains surrounding the city are very fertile and the main crops include rice, wheat, maize, barley, and oilseeds. The economy of Bhagalpur is dependent mainly on agriculture and small businesses. The river is home to the Gangetic dolphin, the National Aquatic Animal of India, which is found in Ganges Basin and the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary is established near the town.

Bhagalpur Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 40 Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies in Bihar state in eastern India.

' Bhagalpur Vidhan Sabha constituency' is one of 243 legislative assembly of legislative assembly of Bihar. It is a part of Bhagalpur lok sabha constituency along with other assembly constituencies viz Gopalpur, Pirpainti, Kahalgaon, Bihpur and Nathnagar. In Bihar Legislative Assembly election, 2015, Bhagalpur will be one of the 36 seats to have VVPAT enabled electronic voting machines.
