Alicante (, ), or , both the Valencian and Spanish being official names, is a city and port in Spain on the Costa Blanca, the capital of the province of Alicante and of the comarca of Alacantí, in the south of the Valencian Community. It is also a historic Mediterranean port. The population of the city of Alicante proper was 328,648, estimated , ranking as the second-largest Valencian city. Including nearby municipalities, the Alicante conurbation had 452,462 residents. The population of the metropolitan area (including Elche and satellite towns) was 757,085 estimates, ranking as the eighth-largest metropolitan area of Spain.
Alicante is a Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) (Denominació d'Origen in Valencian) for wines located in the province of Alicante ( Autonomous Community of Valencia).
There are two separate and distinct sub-zones: Vinalopó, which extends along the banks of the River Vinalopó in the southern area of the province, where the Monastrell grape variety and red wine production are predominant; and the smaller and newer sub-zone known as La Marina, along the coast in the northern area of the province, where the Moscatel grape variety and white wine production are predominant.
Alicante is most renowned for producing a traditional sweet dessert wine known as Fondillón, made from overripe grapes.
Alicante is one of the 52 electoral districts (circunscripciones) used for the Spanish Congress of Deputies—the lower chamber of the Spanish Parliament, the Cortes Generales. It was first contested in modern times in the 1977 General Election. It is the fifth largest district in terms of electorate after Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Sevilla. It has been one of the fastest growing districts in recent years with the electorate growing by 20% between 1993 and 2004 compared to the Spanish average of 11% growth in electorate and consequently gained an extra seat for the 2008 general election.
Alicante is the largest town with over 230,000 voters in the year 2008. With 162,000 voters Elche was the only other municipality with an electorate over 100,000. The next largest municipalities were Alcoy, Elda, Benidorm and Orihuela all with between 40,000 and 50,000 voters out of the total electorate of just over 1,170,000.
