WSMF is a non-commercial, contemporary Christian FM radio station licensed to broadcast on 88.1 FM in Monroe, Michigan and downriver Detroit. It is owned by Northland Community Broadcasters (aka Michigan Community Radio and Superior Communications), which is owned by Jennifer and Edward Czelada. The station broadcasts with a power of 1.2 kW. WSMF's construction permit to upgrade to 2.8 kW expired on March 1, 2009. On March 3, 2009, an application was filed with the FCC similar to the expired construction permit with only a slight change in the directional pattern. This construction permit was modified on February 13, 2012, to 900 watts from a different higher tower.
WSMF began broadcasting in December 2002 as WJOF and carried Joy FM programming from WHYT Imlay City, Michigan. In June 2004 it merged with the other The Light and Joy FM stations, which were owned by Superior Communications. The merger formed Smile FM. The call letters were then changed to WDTR, which had previously been used for a number of years by 90.9 Detroit (currently WRCJ). On April 20, 2011, the call letters were once again changed to WSMF to honor the late Rev. Dr. Mikal Featchurs.
Programming with local inserts originates from WLGH in Lansing and WHYT Imlay City, Michigan.
