Versus

Versus, often abbreviated v., v, vs., or vs, is a Latin word meaning 'against'. It may refer to:

Versus (film)

is a 2000 Japanese independent zombie action film co-written, produced, and directed by Ryuhei Kitamura. The film is set somewhere in the deep forest of Japan, known as the Forest of Resurrection, where an escaped convict simply referred to as "Prisoner KSC2-303" and a gang of Yakuza battle a horde of zombies while at the same time dealing with their sinister leader who wishes to open the forest's portal of darkness.

Originally intended as a sequel to Kitamura's Down to Hell, the script surpassed expectations and ultimately evolved into a different film. Though the film was not released theatrically worldwide (except in France), Versus managed to gain a cult following after its DVD release. In 2004, an extended version called Ultimate Versus was released which included 10 minutes of new footage, as well as additional new music, CGI, and a few editing tweaks.

Versus combines elements of multiple genres such as gunplay, martial arts action, chanbara sword fighting, zombie horror, and comedy. Director Kitamura chose this creative decision because he believed Versus could have been his first and last film he'd ever produce and chose to risk everything by adding film elements that influenced him.

Talk of an American remake and sequel began to circulate in 2008 following the release of Kitamura's Hollywood directing debut, The Midnight Meat Train. However, no news of the remake or sequel has emerged since 2008.

Versus (band)

Versus is an American indie rock band formed in 1990 by Richard Baluyut, Fontaine Toups, and Edward Baluyut in New York City. Richard and Fontaine were to remain the two core members throughout the band's history. The band was noted for their marriage of indie pop songwriting and vocal harmonies to the "loud-soft" dynamics of grunge and alternative rock. They were also noted for their proficient and disciplined musicianship and for their credo of "meat, sports, and rock", none of which had much currency in the early 1990s American indie scene. They named themselves after the Mission of Burma album Vs.

Versus has counted at least one, usually two, and sometimes three of the Filipino-American Baluyut brothers as members throughout its existence, and was perhaps the most prominent example of a wave of American indie bands emerging in the early 1990s which featured Asian American members. Merge Records is Versus' most recent record label, although they have maintained a long involvement with TeenBeat Records, and released two CDs through Caroline Records in the mid-1990s.

The band makes an appearance in the 1994 cult road movie Half-cocked.

Just like the previous two albums, Versus contains only one single released on July 1, 1993, titled " Replay" with another album track "And I close to you" also being included in Mr. Children's fourth single " Cross Road". Versus also marked the first time use of Takeshi Kobayashi as a writer and composer for Mr. Children.

Versus (The Haunted album)

Versus is the sixth studio album by thrash metal band, The Haunted. This marks a return to their aggressive sounds in the previous albums after their experimental fifth album The Dead Eye. The album is more or less about the decadence of mankind as last two songs "Faultline" and "Imperial Death March" point it out.

Versus (journal)

Versus: Quaderni di studi semiotici (often abbreviated as VS) is an influential semiotic journal in Italy. Founded by Umberto Eco, et al. in 1971, it has been an important confrontation space for a large number of scholars of several fields coping with signs and signification. Its foundation and activities have contributed to consolidate the perception of semiotics as an academic field in itself both in Italy and in Europe.

Versus has published original articles by most influential European semioticians, including; Umberto Eco, A.J. Greimas, Jean-Marie Floch, Paolo Fabbri, Jacques Fontanille, Claude Zilberberg, Ugo Volli and Patrizia Violi. At the same time, almost every issue also contains articles by younger, less famous semioticians dealing with new research perspectives in semiotics.

Each issue is focused on a specific argument, like iconism, translation and history of sign or on studies regarding a specific author (such as Louis Hjelmslev, Charles Sanders Peirce or Michel Bréal).
