What is "type locality"

n. 1 (context geology English) The location, usually where the first specimen was discovered, considered most representative of a mineral, formation etc. 2 (context taxonomy English) The location where a nomenclatural type or name-bearing type was collected.

Type locality, also called type area, type site or type section, is the locality where a particular rock type, stratigraphic unit or mineral species is first identified.

The term is similar to the term type site in archaeology or the term type specimen in biology.
