also swash-buckler, 1550s, "blustering, swaggering fighting man" (earlier simply swash, 1540s), from swash "fall of a blow" (see swash) + buckler "shield." The original sense seems to have been "one who makes menacing noises by striking his or an opponent's shield."

Swashbuckler is a romantic adventure film produced in the U.S. by Universal Studios and released in 1976. The film is based on the story “The Scarlet Buccaneer”, written by Paul Wheeler and adapted for the screen by Jeffery Bloom. It was directed by James Goldstone and was rated PG.

The movie was released in the UK as The Scarlet Buccaneer.

Swashbuckler is an early fighting game for the Apple II family of computers, created by Paul Stephenson and published by Datamost in 1982.

The player controls a sword-wielding swashbuckler who must fight and dispatch various attackers. Combat occurs in a wooden-beamed ship's hold littered with skeletons and cobwebs, which the player views from the side.

The Apple II version of the game was translated into Bulgarian under the name "Авантюрист" (Adventurer).
