standing bolt

Stud \Stud\, n. [AS. studu a post; akin to Sw. st["o]d a prop, Icel. sto? a post, sty?ja to prop, and probably ultimately to E. stand; cf. D. stut a prop, G. st["u]tze. See Stand.]

  1. A stem; a trunk. [Obs.]
