Skerryvore (from the Gaelic An Sgeir Mhòr meaning "The Great Skerry") is a remote reef that lies off the west coast of Scotland, 12 miles (19 kilometres) south-west of the island of Tiree. Skerryvore is best known as the name given to the lighthouse on the skerry, built with some difficulty between 1838 and 1844 by Alan Stevenson.
At a height of 156 feet (48 m) it is the tallest lighthouse in Scotland. The shore station was at Hynish on Tiree (which now houses the Skerryvore Lighthouse Museum); operations were later transferred to Erraid, west of Mull. The remoteness of the location led to the keepers receiving additional payments in kind. The light shone without a break from 1844 until a fire in 1954 shut down operations for five years. The lighthouse was automated in 1994.
Skerryvore may have the following meanings:
- Skerryvore lighthouse in Argyll, Scotland.
- Skerryvore, Ontario, a small community in Canada located on the shores of Georgian Bay.
- Skerryvore (band) An award winning Scottish nu-folk band based in Glasgow.
- Home of Robert Louis Stevenson, April 1885 - August 1887, in Westbourne, Bournemouth. The building was destroyed by German bombers on the 16th November 1940, a memorial garden is now in its place containing a statue of the lighthouse Skerryvore.
Skerryvore are a Scottish Celtic Rock group formed on Tiree, Argyll and Bute in 2004. The band started off with Tiree brothers Daniel Gillespie and Martin Gillespie aka Captain Clunge, alongside regular Tiree visitor Fraser West and his friend Alec Dalglish, both from Livingston, West Lothian. The group took their name from the Skerryvore lighthouse that lies 12 miles (19 kilometres) off the coast of Tiree. The group’s present line-up includes Craig Espie, Alan Scobie and Jodie Bremaneson. Skerryvore have released five studio albums, with an additional ‘deluxe’ version of one including some live tracks.
Their earlier work was ‘West Coast Ceilidh’ inspired, with Celtic influences which have remained present in all their work. As the band have developed, rock, pop, jazz, Cajun and country influences have all emerged, but the traditional Celtic roots and instrumentation have remained.
Now based in and around Glasgow, Scotland, Skerryvore tour throughout Scotland, in Europe, and in the USA, the Middle East, and in China.
