Samar ( Waray-Waray: Probinsya han Samar, , , formerly known as Western Samar) is a province in the Philippines located in the region of Eastern Visayas. Its capital is Catbalogan City.

The province covers the western section of Samar Island and several islands in the Samar Sea situated west of the mainland. It is bordered on the north by Northern Samar, east by Eastern Samar, south by Leyte and the Leyte Gulf, and west by the Samar Sea. Samar is connected to the island of Leyte via the San Juanico Bridge, which spans the San Juanico Strait, the narrowest strait in the world.

Samar, along with Leyte province, was created after the historical province of the same name was split into two independent provinces in 1768. Samar province occupied the entire island of Samar and its adjacent islands until 1965, when it was partitioned into three provinces ( Northern Samar, Eastern Samar and "Western" Samar).

Fishing and agriculture are the major economic activities in the province.

On 8 November 2013, the province was significantly damaged by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), particularly at the towns of Basey and Marabut.

Samar is an island in the Visayas, within central Philippines and the third largest island in the country. The island is divided into three provinces: Samar province (the western two-fifths of the island of Samar), Northern Samar province, and Eastern Samar province. These three provinces, along with the provinces on the nearby islands of Leyte and Biliran are part of the Eastern Visayas region.

Samar is the easternmost island in the Visayas. The island is separated from Leyte by the San Juanico Strait, which at its narrowest point is only about two kilometers across. This strait is crossed by the San Juanico Bridge. Samar lies southeast of the Bicol Peninsula on Luzon, the country's largest island; the San Bernardino Strait separates the two. To the south of Samar is the Leyte Gulf, the site of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, one of the most decisive naval battles during the Second World War. The gulf opens out into the Philippine Sea, found to the east of Samar and is part of the Pacific Ocean.

Samar ( Hindi: समर, Urdu: سمر, translation: Conflict) (1999) is an Indian feature film directed by Shyam Benegal. This movie is based on the book "Unheard Voices: Stories of Forgotten Lives" by Harsh Mander. It was produced by National Film Development Corporation of India, a government agency.

It stars Rajeshwari Sachdev, Jonhawiwi Forsywas, Kishore Kadam and Seema Biswas among others. The film is in Hindustani. The film's music is composed by Vanraj Bhatia. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1999.

Samar (English: War) is a 2013 Tamil mystery thriller film written and directed by Thiru. It features Vishal, Trisha Krishnan and Sunaina in the lead roles, with Manoj Bajpayee and J. D. Chakravarthy appearing in supporting roles. Richard M. Nathan handled the cinematography, while the film's soundtrack and score were composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja and Dharan Kumar, respectively. The Telugu version titled Vetadu-Ventadu, is scheduled for release on 24 January 2013. The story revolves around a trekking guide, who is forced to leave for Bangkok under strange circumstances and witnesses a series of puzzling incidents there. After several delays finally the film was released on 13 January 2013 to positive reviews.

Samar (historical province)

Samar (1768-1965) was a former province in the Philippines which is coterminous with the island of Samar and its outlying islands. It was established in 1768 after it got separated from its predecessor, the province of Samar and Leyte.

On June 19 1965, the Philippine Congress along with the three Samar Representatives, Eladio T. Balite (1st District), Fernando R. Veloso (2nd District) and Felipe J. Abrigo (3rd District), approved Republic Act No. 4221 dividing the province of Samar into three divisions: Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, and Western Samar. Each province adopted a new capital: Catbalogan (Western Samar), Borongan (Eastern Samar), and Catarman (Northern Samar). On June 21 1969, under Republic Act No. 5650, Western Samar was renamed simply into Samar with Catbalogan still as the capital.
