Douglas Harper's Etymology Dictionary
place mentioned in Gen. xiv:18, from Hebrew Shalem, usually said to be another word for Jerusalem and to mean "peace" (compare Hebrew shalom, Arabic salaam). Common as a Baptist and Methodist meetinghouse name, so much so that by mid-19c. it (along with Bethel and Ebenezer) had come to be used in Britain generically to mean "non-conformist chapel."

Salem may also refer to:
Salem is an Israeli extreme metal band, pioneers of the oriental metal movement and of the Israeli heavy metal scene in general. Much of their lyrics and music deals with political issues concerning the Jewish people and Israel, most notably the concept albums Kaddish (1994) and Collective Demise (2002).
Salem is a brand of cigarettes introduced in 1956 by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company as the first filter-tipped menthol cigarette. Its name (along with that of the Winston brand) derives from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the city where RJR was founded and headquartered. Salem cigarettes are unique in that they are blended with Asian Menthol rather than the traditional mainstream Menthol. It is currently a product of ITG Brands LLC, a subsidiary of Imperial Tobacco Company. In the 1983 prison movie Bad Boys, both Salem and Winston cigarettes are seen being offered to and purchased by Sean Penn's character.
Salem ( Hebrew שָׁלֵם, Shalem, Greek Σαλήμ) is an ancient, Middle Eastern town mentioned in the Bible.
Salem is referenced in the following biblical passages:
- "And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God." ( Genesis 14:18)
- "In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion." ( Psalm 76:2)
This refers to the royal city of Melchizedek and is traditionally identified with Jerusalem. It is also mentioned in Hebrews Chapter 7.
Possibly a different place is mentioned in Genesis 33:18, "And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city." The town of Salim corresponds to this location. It is also mentioned in the Gospel of John 3:23: "And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim [Σαλείμ], because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized."
Based on Joseph Smith's translation of the Bible, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe the ancient city of Salem and its inhabitants were taken into heaven, or "translated," in the same manner as the City of Enoch.
Various towns have been named after Biblical Salem.
The fictional town of Salem, Illinois is the setting for the U.S. soap opera Days of Our Lives. It is located in the Midwest United States, though the state was not mentioned until the episode which aired on May 23, 2013. When John is looking at the itinerary it states, "Salem, MN". It was built and named in 1802, since Salem celebrated its 200-year birthday in 2002. It was vaguely set in New England, until it was moved to somewhere in the Midwest in the 1970s. For many years the real Salem, Illinois held a Salem Days fest, which several members of the cast attended.
While it is constantly referenced as a town, it features more characteristics of a city; for example it is home of the large, multinational corporations DiMera Enterprises, Titan Industries and Basic Black, Mythic Incorporated, as well as a full University and an international airport. Despite its otherwise innocuous presence, over the years it has been a hotbed of foreign intrigue, organized crime, and other strange happenings.
Characters often make reference to Chicago being nearby and the 312 Area Code, indicating Salem may be in Illinois. This, however, had contradicted characters mentioning going to Illinois and by the license plates of the cars in Salem. Is notable to mention that some characters are Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fans. It was mentioned that Salem had legalized gay marriage in a January 2014 episode. In October 2015, Today confirmed that Salem's location is in the state of Illinois.

It is noteworthy as a depiction of Welsh piety, the traditional Welsh national costume, and for a contentious belief that the devil is depicted within it. Mass reproductions throughout the early and mid 20th century ensured the image became famous throughout Britain.
