Robert

The name Robert is a Germanic given name, from Proto-Germanic *χrōþi- "fame" and *berχta- "bright". Compare Old Dutch Robrecht and Old High German Hrodebert (a compound of hruod "fame, glory" and berht "bright"). It is also in use as a surname.

After becoming widely used in Continental Europe it entered England in its Old French form Robert, where an Old English cognate form (Hrēodbēorht, Hrodberht, Hrēodbēorð, Hrœdbœrð, Hrœdberð) had existed before the Norman Conquest. The feminine version is Roberta. The Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish form is Roberto.

Similar to the name Richard, "Robert" is also a common name in many Germanic languages, including English, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and Icelandic. It can be used as a French, Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian name as well.

Robert (disambiguation)

Robert is a surname and a male given name.

It may refer to:

Robert (son of William I of Sicily)

Robert (1153/4–1159/60) was the second son of King William I of Sicily and his queen, Margaret of Navarre. He was about four or five years old when he was appointed Prince of Capua in 1157 or 1158. Prior to his accession, since 1144, his father had been Prince of Capua. Robert's Latin title, princeps Capuanorum, means literally "Prince of Capuans". He was the third Robert of Capua, after Robert I and Robert II. The latter, who had been deposed in 1135, returned in 1155–56 in an effort to reclaim his principality. He managed to control some territory, but was ultimately unsuccessful. The young Robert's rule in Capua can be traced in documents between September 1158 and May 1159, but he had died by February–March 1160, when his father was once again ruling Capua directly. Eventually, Robert's younger brother Henry was appointed Prince of Capua in May 1166.

Robert (doll)

Robert, otherwise known as Robert the Doll, Robert the haunted doll, or Robert the Enchanted Doll, is a doll that was once owned by Key West painter and author Robert Eugene Otto. The supposedly cursed doll has become a fixture of ghost tours in the Key West area. Aesthetically, Robert resembles an early 20th-century American sailor. Contrary to popular belief, the doll's hair is not made of human hair, but rather, it consists of a synthetic material resembling wool yarn.

Robert (singer)

Robert, or RoBERT (born Myriam Roulet in Paris on 14 October 1964), is a French singer, composer and lyricist.

An independent artist and songwriter, Robert's musical style is described as fairy-like, halfway between the tragic and the gothic, sometimes with a pinch of absurdity. Themes of death, childhood, and love regularly appear in her songs, marked by her crystalline, often fragile opera voice and the baroque (and sometimes electronic) music. Often compared to Mylène Farmer, Barbara or Marie Laforêt, she has found artistic success in France and Belgium, but also in Japan, despite a certain media absence. Robert's live shows are often full of hypnotic, giddy, often joyful or even dramatic performances.

Robert (archbishop of Trier)

Robert, also spelled Ruotbert or Rotbert (died 19 May 956), was the archbishop of Trier from 931 until his death. Robert (bishop of Le Mans)

Robert (died 883/85) was the bishop of Le Mans from 857.

Robert had a long-running dispute with the monastery of Saint-Calais. He even produced several forged documents—the famous "Le Mans forgeries"—to support his claim to oversight of the abbey. The monks had had their privilege of episcopal immunity and right of free election of their abbot confirmed at the council of Bonneuil in 855 and again in 862 at Pîtres. Robert succeeded in having Pope Nicholas I order the case re-opened. King Charles the Bald ruled in the Saint-Calais's favour at a synod in the palace of Verberie on 25 October 863. Charles had granted the abbey to Robert in 862, but he was able to claim that it was only a benefice and thus revocable, and that the bishop did not possess it by right, as he claimed. At Verberie, Charles placed the abbey under royal control and denied its claimed immunity.

In 864 Charles sent Robert to Rome with Rothad, the deposed bishop of Soissons, to argue his case before Pope Nicholas. In 873 Robert requested Charles to approve the surrender of some precaria to the monastery of Saint-Vincent du Mans, which was under episcopal control at the time.
