Philia (Greco-Roman magic)

Out of all of the forms of love magic that existed in the Greco-Roman world, the two most common were eros and philia. Unlike eros, which was more commonly used by men, philia magic was utilized by women and others who were considered to be social inferiors.

Since there was an emphasis on service to the state in Greco-Roman culture, these social inferiors felt like they were doing their country a service. If a woman was capable of repairing her broken marriage and improving her husband’s interaction with the neighbors through magic, society was benefiting as a whole. Despite this protective purpose seen by women, philia spells were looked down on by men. They were a great source of anxiety because men saw them as tools used by the social inferiors to hijack power from the male-dominated hierarchy.

Philia (song)

"Philia" is the sixth single by Versailles, released on March 16, 2011. The title track was used as the theme song to the TV show Onegai Kanaete Versailles, which starred the band themselves. The single came in three editions, each with a different cover: a regular with just the CD, and two limited editions each with a different DVD. The first included live performances from their concert at Shibuya C.C. Lemon Hall on September 4, 2010, the other has a promotional video for the title track that is different from the one used to promote on TV.

Usage examples of "philia".

Nothing may show except for one or two philia, lying above the surface.

Warily, the Consort of Shadows studied them, clinging to the cavern roof, his philia waving in a frenzy.

Most likely he would dig a hole somewhere along the tunnel, bury himself and hide with nothing but one or two philia above the ground.

Gaborn could see no fresh sign of reavers at the crossroad, no philia peeking suspiciously from beneath a pile of dirt.

It came rushing out of the column at tremendous speed, the philia along its head waving wildly.

Now the reaver spun about, snarling, clawing at the air, and blindly waving his philia, seeking to catch sight or scent of its enemy.

Across the brow of his saddle were half a dozen philia taken from the bunghole of a reaver.

Their mouths were filled with philia cut from the bung-holes of dead reavers, so that the scent of moldy garlic wafted over the fields.

At his feet lay a pile of stinking philia, and Borenson could see more loathsome pieces of flesh hanging like talismans of doom from the castle walls.

The philia on its head and along its jaw raised into the air and waved like snakes as all its senses came alert.

Averan came rushing up the tunnel, and the reaver whirled its massive head to gaze at her, all of its philia quivering.

Furthermore, they seemed to peer toward the castle, all of their philia waving madly.

A huge blade-bearer was rushing toward her, all the philia along its head waving in alarm at the scent of blood.

The reaver mage whirled and peered at him, fanning the bony plates of its head wide, all of its philia waving wildly in alarm.

It skidded to a halt and whirled, its philia writhing as it spotted Borenson.
