Oedipus

son of Laius and Jocasta, the king and queen of Thebes, Greek, literally "swollen-foot," from oidan "to swell" (from PIE *oid-; see edema) + pous (genitive podos) "foot" (see foot (n.)). Oedipus complex (1910) coined by Freud. In Latin, figurative references to Oedipus generally referred to solving riddles. Oedipus effect (1957) is Karl Popper's term for "the self-fulfilling nature of prophecies or predictions."

Oedipus

Oedipus ( or or ; Oidípous meaning "swollen foot") was a mythical Greek king of Thebes. A tragic hero in Greek mythology, Oedipus accidentally fulfilled a prophecy that he would end up killing his father and marrying his mother, thereby bringing disaster to his city and family.

The story of Oedipus is the subject of Sophocles's tragedy Oedipus the King, which was followed by Oedipus at Colonus and then Antigone. Together, these plays make up Sophocles's three Theban plays. Oedipus represents two enduring themes of Greek myth and drama: the flawed nature of humanity and an individual's role in the course of destiny in a harsh universe.

In the most well-known version of the myth, Oedipus was born to King Laius and Queen Jocasta. Laius wished to thwart a prophecy, so he left Oedipus to die on a mountainside. However, the baby was found by shepherds and raised by King Polybus and Queen Merope as their own. Oedipus learned from the oracle at Delphi of the prophecy that he would end up killing his father and marrying his mother but, unaware of his true parentage, believed he was fated to murder Polybus and marry Merope, so left for Thebes. On his way he met an older man and quarrelled, and Oedipus killed the stranger. Continuing on to Thebes, he found that the king of the city (Laius) had been recently killed, and that the city was at the mercy of the Sphinx. Oedipus answered the monster's riddle correctly, defeating it and winning the throne of the dead king - and the hand in marriage of the king's widow, and (unbeknownst to him) his mother Jocasta.

Years later, to end a plague on Thebes, Oedipus searched to find who had killed Laius, and discovered that he himself was responsible. Jocasta, upon realizing that she had married both her own son, and her husband's murderer, hanged herself. Oedipus then seized two pins from her dress and blinded himself with them.

The legend of Oedipus has been retold in many versions, and was used by Sigmund Freud to name and give mythic precedent to the Oedipus complex.

Oedipus (horse)

'''Oedipus ''' (1946–1978) was an American Champion Thoroughbred steeplechase racehorse. Sired by 1929's flat racing Horse of the Year Blue Larkspur and foaled in Kentucky, Oedipus was purchased by Lillian Bostwick Phipps and was conditioned by future Hall of Fame trainer Pete Bostwick.

Oedipus raced from 1948 through 1954 and was voted American Champion Steeplechase Horse for 1950 and again in 1951 when he won American steeplechasing's Triple Crown: the Broad Hollow Steeplechase Handicap, the Brook National Steeplechase Handicap, and the American Grand National. In 1952, Oedipus was again voted Champion, this time sharing the honor with Jam.

Retired at the end of the 1954 racing season, Oedipus died in 1978, the year he was inducted in the United States' National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Oedipus (band)

Oedipus was a rock band from Los Angeles. The band consisted of Jeremy Haffner (lead vocals, bass guitar), Stephen Cohen (guitar, vocals) and Keith Larsen (drums, vocals). The band's influences included Rage Against the Machine, Kings of Leon, 311 and Incubus, among others.

In 2013, Haffner and Cohen called the end of Oedipus. They are now part of a musical project JJXO.

Oedipus (DJ)

Oedipus (real name Edward Hyson) is an American radio personality. Oedipus’s radio career began in 1975 as a D.J. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s college station WTBS (today WMBR). He gained notoriety by starting the first Punk rock radio show in America, introducing Punk and New Wave to Boston and to the country.

In 1977, Oedipus convinced WBCN to hire him as an announcer to bring his cutting edge sounds to the airwaves. In 1981 he was named Program Director, a position he held until he left in 2004. Under his tutelage, the station was recognized as an industry leader in breaking new music and received countless awards for its successes. Multiple Billboard, FMQB, and Gavin Report award recipient for best Program Director of the Year, Oedipus hosted the acclaimed “Nocturnal Emissions” program for over 25 years, playing new tracks every Sunday night.

Oedipus has his own foundation, The Oedipus Foundation, and is on the Board of Directors of The Technology Broadcasting Corporation of MIT, Stop Handgun Violence and an original member of the Board of Directors for Mobius (an artist-run center for experimental work in all media). He is a member of the Board of Mentors for Community Servings, an organization that feeds Boston-based families with acute life-threatening illnesses, the board of advisors for the Boston Music Awards and a former member of the Board of Overseers for the Huntington Theatre Company.

Oedipus hosted a Christmas Eve show annually on WBCN. Since WBCN's demise he has kept that tradition alive since by presenting his Christmas Eve show on WFNX from 2009-2012, then after WFNX's demise on RadioBDC, The Boston Globe's internet radio station in 2013 and 2014 before moving to WGBH in 2015. On Saturday 5 October 2013 RadioBDC posted on their Facebook page that Oedipus would be hosting "The Oedipus Project" on Saturday mornings from 10AM local to noon.

Oedipus (Voltaire play)

Oedipus is a tragedy by the French dramatist and philosopher Voltaire that was first performed in 1718. It was his first play and the first literary work for which he used the pen-name Voltaire (his real name was François-Marie Arouet). In adapting Sophocles' Athenian tragedy Oedipus the King, Voltaire attempted to rationalise the plot and motivation of its characters. In a letter of 1719 he indicated that he found it improbable that the murder of Laius had not been investigated earlier and that Oedipus should take so long to understand the oracle's clear pronouncement. Voltaire adds a subplot concerning the love of Philoctète for Jocaste. He also reduces the prominence of the theme of incest.

Voltaire completed it in 1717 during his 11-month imprisonment. It premièred on 18 November 1718 at the Comédie-Française, during his first period of exile at Châtenay-Malabry. Quinault-Dufresne played Oedipus, and Charlotte Desmares, Jocaste. The Régent was present at the première and congratulated Voltaire for his success. The Regent was long rumored to have an incestuous relation with his elder daughter, Marie Louise Élisabeth d'Orléans, Duchess of Berry. Voltaire had been arrested and sent to the Bastille in May 1717 after telling to a police informer that the Duchess was pregnant and secluding herself in her castle of La Muette pending her delivery. Rumors of Philippe's incestuous relationship with his daughter had made Arouet's play controversial long before it was performed. Ironically the première was also attended by the Duchess of Berry who entered in royal style escorted by the ladies of her court and her own guards. Rumored to be in the family way again, the Regent's daughter could no longer conceal her state and her very visible pregnancy inspired the satirists' malicious comments that spectators would not only see Oedipus (the Regent) and Jocaste (Berry) but maybe witness also the birth of Eteocles. The presence of the ill-reputed princess thus contributed to the public success of the play The production ran for 45 performances and received great critical acclaim that marked the start of Voltaire's success in his theatrical career. It constituted "the greatest dramatic success of eighteenth century France". It was revived on 7 May 1723 with Le Couvreur and Quinault-Dufresne and remained in the répertoire of Comédie-Française until 1852.

In a letter of 1731 Voltaire wrote that when he wrote the play he was "full of my readings of the ancient authors [...] I knew very little of the theater in Paris."

Oedipus (Euripides)

Oedipus ( or ; , Oidípous) is a play by the 5th-century BCE Athenian dramatist Euripides. The play is now lost except for some fragments. What survives of the play covers similar ground as Sophocles' acclaimed Oedipus the King, but scholars and historians have found there are significant differences. In Oedipus the King, the title character blinds himself upon learning his true parentage, accidentally killing his father and marrying his mother Jocasta. In Euripides' play, however, it appears Oedipus is blinded by Laius, a servant of his father and Oedipus' predecessor as king of Thebes. Furthermore, Euripides' play implies Oedipus was blinded before it was known that Laius was his father. Also, while in Sophocles' play Jocasta kills herself, remaining fragments of Euripides' play depict Jocasta as having survived and accompanied Oedipus into exile.

She was the daughter of OEdipus and Jocasta, who, with all their descendants, were the victims of an unrelenting fate, dooming them to destruction.
