The Collaborative International Dictionary
Nowel \Now"el\, n. [See Noel.] [Written also no["e]l.]
Christmas; also, a shout of joy at Christmas for the birth of the Savior. [Obs.]
(Mus.) A kind of hymn, or canticle, of medi[ae]val origin, sung in honor of the Nativity of our Lord; a Christmas carol.
--Grove.
Douglas Harper's Etymology Dictionary
late 14c., nowel "feast of Christmas," from Old French noel "the Christmas season," variant of nael, from Latin natalis (dies) "birth (day)," in Church Latin in reference to the birthday of Christ, from natus, past participle of nasci "be born" (Old Latin gnasci; see genus). The modern word in English, with the sense "a Christmas carol" (1811) probably is a separate borrowing from French. As a masc. proper name, from Old French, probably literally "of or born on Christmas."
Wiktionary
n. 1 Christmas 2 A kind of hymn, or canticle, of mediaeval origin, sung in honor of the birth of Christ; a Christmas carol.

Wikipedia
Noel is a masculine French given name derived from noël, meaning Christmas. The actual feminine form is Noelle, but in English-speaking regions Noel is sometimes used for females as well. The original French spellings are Noël and Noëlle.

Noël is a Christmas album by Joan Baez, released in 1966.
Working with arranger-conductor Peter Schickele ( PDQ Bach), Baez, for the first time, recorded an album outside the standard guitar-based folk format. She worked with Schickele on her next two albums, both of which also featured classical orchestration.
Unlike holiday albums by many other popular artists, Baez included mostly traditional material, avoiding more lighthearted or commercial fare in favor of a somber, understated tone. She included both familiar ("The Little Drummer Boy") and more obscure ("Down in Yon Forest") material. The album also contains several brief instrumental selections arranged by Schickele.

The second single, " Like a Child", also became very popular and was his first single to reach the top position on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. The third single from the album, " Out of Time" did not enter the Billboard Hot 100 but was the second single to reach the top of the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart and the last to participate. The fourth single, " Change", also had similar success as the previous singles.
