Naginata

The naginata (なぎなた, 薙刀) is one of several varieties of traditionally made Japanese blades (nihonto) in the form of a pole weapon. Naginata were originally used by the samurai class of feudal Japan, as well as by ashigaru (foot soldiers) and sōhei (warrior monks). The naginata is the iconic weapon of the onna-bugeisha-archetype; a type of female warrior belonging to the Japanese nobility.

Naginata for fighting men and warrior monks were ō-naginata. The kind used by women was called ko-naginata. Since the naginata with its pole is heavier and much slower than the Japanese sword, the blade of the ko-naginata was smaller than the battlefield ō-naginata in order to compensate for female lesser height and upper-body strength compared to that of armoured male samurai.

Usage examples of "naginata".

He'd been a help rehafting the naginata and spear onto good smooth poles they'd found in the tool shed behind the cabin, too.

It landed on the haft of the naginata rather than the man who held it, and the tough hickory snapped like a straw.

Task Force 58 was barely halfway to Erebor, and he would be fortunate indeed if Naginata was the only ship which had to drop out of formation, yet he dared not slow.

He was very close when his right hand whipped in front of him and the miniature naginata swept toward Nicholas with appalling speed.

Nicholas saw Shidare's hand come up, the naginata extended between them.

They inventoried the strange-looking weapons of those Praxians-weirdly-conformed naginata, which looked like long halberds with a curved blade at one end and a spike at the other, and short, one-handed crossbows with their grips protected by boiled, shaped leather, and the rest.

Gnea wore sword and knife on her harness like Bela, but where the taller woman carried a crossbow, Gnea bore a Praxian naginata and a shield with a spiked boss in its center.
