Mesobola

Mesobola is a genus of fish in the family Cyprinidae, the carps and minnows. There are four species in the genus, all endemic to Africa. They are known commonly as neobolins.

These fish live in freshwater systems such as rivers and reservoirs, where they form shoals.

Species include:

  • Mesobola bredoi ( Poll, 1945)
  • Mesobola brevianalis ( Boulenger, 1908) – river sardine
  • Mesobola moeruensis (Boulenger, 1915)
  • Mesobola spinifer ( R. G. Bailey & Matthes, 1971) – Malagarasi sardine
