(; ) is a fictional character in the Mario video game franchise, created by Nintendo's Japanese video game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto. Serving as the company's mascot and the eponymous protagonist of the series, Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation. Depicted as a short, pudgy, Italian plumber who resides in the Mushroom Kingdom, his adventures generally center upon rescuing Princess Peach from the Koopa villain Bowser. His younger brother is Luigi.

The Mario franchise is the best-selling video game franchise of all time. Over 210 million units of the overall Mario series of games have been sold. Outside of the Super Mario platform series, other Mario genres include the Mario Kart racing series, sports games such as the Mario Tennis and Mario Golf series, role-playing games such as Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario, and educational games such as Mario Is Missing! and Mario's Time Machine. Mario Dewar Barrett (born August 27, 1986), known mononymously as Mario, is an American singer-songwriter, actor, model, and record producer. He is known for his singles " Just a Friend" (2002) and " Let Me Love You" (2004), which won him two Billboard awards, as well as for appearing in the films Step Up and Freedom Writers. He has released four studio albums: Mario (2002), Turning Point (2004), Go (2007), and D.N.A. (2009). At the end of the 2000s decade, Mario was ranked by Billboard #98 on their "Artist of the Decade" list. His fifth studio album, Paradise Cove, is set to be released in late 2016.

Mario is the eponymous debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Mario. It was released on March 19, 2002, by J Records. At the time of the release, Barrett was only 15 years old. Mario was supported by three singles: " Just a Friend 2002", " Braid My Hair" and " C'Mon".

The album debuted at number 9 on the US Billboard 200, selling 96,000 copies in the first week. The album became a certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for selling 596,000 copies in the United States. In 2006, the Japanese edition to this album, it included the "Old School" version for his single, "Just a Friend 2002".

Mario is the Italian, Croatian, German, Spanish, Bulgarian, Greek and English form of the Roman name Marius. The Portuguese version of the name is Mário, while the Greek version is spelt Marios, and the Polish Mariusz, in transcriptions to English script.
