Mantra

A "Mantra" ( ( Sanskrit: मंत्र);) is a sacred utterance, a numinous sound, a syllable, word or phonemes, or group of words in Sanskrit believed by practitioners to have psychological and spiritual powers. A mantra may or may not have syntactic structure or literal meaning.

The earliest mantras were composed in Vedic Sanskrit by Hindus in India, and are at least 3000 years old. Mantras now exist in various schools of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. Similar hymns, chants, compositions and concepts are found in Zoroastrianism, Taoism, Christianity, and elsewhere.

The use, structure, function, importance, and types of mantras vary according to the school and philosophy of Hinduism and of Buddhism. Mantras serve a central role in tantra. In this school, mantras are considered to be a sacred formula and a deeply personal ritual, effective only after initiation. In other schools of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism or Sikhism, initiation is not a requirement.

Mantras come in many forms, including ṛc (verses from the Rigveda for example) and sāman (musical chants from the Sāmaveda for example). They are typically melodic, mathematically structured meters, believed to be resonant with numinous qualities. At its simplest, the word ॐ (Aum, Om) serves as a mantra. In more sophisticated forms, mantras are melodic phrases with spiritual interpretations such as a human longing for truth, reality, light, immortality, peace, love, knowledge, and action. Some mantras have no literal meaning, yet are musically uplifting and spiritually meaningful.

Mantra (comics)

Mantra is an American comic book series written by Mike Barr, mainly penciled by Terry Dodson and published by Malibu Comics in the mid-1990s, until it was purchased by Marvel Comics, leading to the cancellation of the title after 24 issues. Adam Hughes is credited for the character designs.

Mantra is the name of the lead character, an Ultra (superhero) within Malibu's Ultraverse line of comics. An eternal warrior named Lukasz and his compatriots had been fighting the villain Boneyard for centuries: whenever an individual soldier dies, his soul would be placed in a new body, and take up the fight once more. In the 1990s, Lukasz' leader Archmage was betrayed and captured, leading to the permanent death of most of the warriors and a final reincarnation for one, Lukasz himself: to his shock, Lukasz was put into the body of a woman, Eden Blake.

In addition to being forced to deal with life as a woman, Lukasz also faces the particular challenges of Eden's life — in particular, her two children and her ex-husband. For the first time, Lukasz confronts the fact that for 1500 years he had been destroying families by stealing men's bodies and forcing them to walk away from their lives. He fell in love with her soul, which still existed within him.

He also discovers that Eden had vast latent powers, including a mystical armor activated by a specific invocation including the word 'mantra', leading to the media dubbing her as such.

Mantra encounters Prime who develops somewhat of a crush on her female aspect.

By the time Shelter released Mantra, punk rock scene was in evidence in America, especially in California, with bands like Bad Religion, Rancid, The Offspring and Green Day achieving mainstream popularity.

With this album the band moved away from the more punk pop style and created a melodic hardcore style. The song “Here We Go” even became a hardcore anthem in North Apollo, Pennsylvania. Lyrically the album focused mainly on Hare Krishna philosophy and the problems the Western Civilization creates — as it's clear by a manifesto entitled SUPERSOUL in the album's booklet, before the songs, signed by band's frontman Ray Cappo. The first song, "Message of the Bhagavad", is introduced by an excerpt of a Bhagavad Gita verses reading.

Mantra was distributed in Brazil featuring two bonus tracks, expanding the listing from 11 to 13. The lyrics for tracks #12 and #13 were not included in the booklet though. By the time of the release, the band hadn't played live in the country yet, which happened for the first time in 1996.

It happened to be the Gayatri mantra, that most sublime of all verses, the sloka that paved the way for all auspicious beginnings.

Sanskrit mantra as fiercely as a general calling out a battle cry, and in a burst of blinding blue light, he morphed into the seer-mage Vishwamitra.

For a moment Dasaratha thought he was about to sketch a mantra in the air, blasting the second Vishwamitra to ashes, proving his own authenticity.

Vishwamitra nodded, and both seer-mages raised their arms high, chanting a mantra that even Dasaratha had never heard before.

The mantra I spoke instructed it to seek out and expose those corrupted by the lord of Lanka.

And at the right time, she would have sent out a mantra to inflame that masth elephant, panicking the horses of the PFs on Raghuvamsha Avenue and causing a stampede.

As the crowd muttered and shifted uneasily, Vishwamitra chanted aloud a mantra too arcane and complex for any brahmin to decipher.

Vishwamitra reached the end of his second mantra, and as abruptly as the chaos had begun, it ended.

The next moment they were still as statues, frozen in the attitudes in which they had been at the instant the mantra took effect.

As he had recited the Gayatri mantra, standing waist-deep in the icy flowing water, taking his acamana, he had been aware of eyes watching his back.

Kamboja stallion that had proved implacable even in the heat of battle, wheeled in startled terror, settling only after he whispered the mantra of Shani, his patron deity, in its ear.

He spurred his mount on with another mantra, riding to the aid of the fallen horseman trapped beneath his own mount, its head hacked off and still gushing dark blood, everything coated with a thick layer of brownish-black offal streaked with patches of mucous slime.

I have used a mantra that ensures that your arrows are replaced faster than you can loose them.

As the last syllables of the mantra faded away, traveling with shrieking penetration into the depths of the jungle, Lakshman heard the ground-shaking thunder of the next wave approaching.

Speak any mantra and the corresponding shining one will be at your command instantly.
