Ironworker is a class of machines that can shear, notch, and punch holes in steel plate. There may have been a brand name called Ironworker. The name is now used to refer to the whole class of machines (made by at least a dozen brands, such as Piranha, GEKA, Edwards, Pedinghaus, Precise Power etc.). If there ever was a brand name, it has now become a genericized trademark. Ironworkers generate force using mechanical advantage or hydraulic systems.
An ironworker is a tradesman (man or woman) who works in the ironworking industry. Ironworkers erect (or even dismantle) the structural steel framework of pre-engineered metal buildings, single and multi-story buildings, stadiums, arenas, hospitals, towers, wind turbines, and bridges. Ironworkers assemble the structural framework in accordance with engineered drawings.
