Hippodamia (wife of Pirithous)

In Greek mythology, Hippodamia (; , from hippos "horse" and damazein "to tame"; also known as Deidamia (; Ancient Greek: ), Laodamia , Hippoboteia , Dia or Ischomache ), daughter of Atrax or Butes, was the bride of King Pirithous of the Lapiths. At their wedding, Hippodamia, the other female guests, and the young boys were almost abducted by the Centaurs. Pirithous and his friend, Theseus, led the Lapiths to victory over the Centaurs in a battle known as the Centauromachy. With Pirithous, she mothered Polypoetes, but died shortly after her son's birth.

The abduction of Hippodamia was not an uncommon subject of Western art in the classical tradition, including the sculpture The Abduction of Hippodameia by French artist Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and a painting by Rubens.

Hippodamia (genus)

Hippodamia is a genus of ladybirds in the family Coccinellidae. It includes the most common native North American "ladybug", H. convergens, which can form overwintering aggregations numbering in the millions. Another notable member is Hippodamia variegata, which occurs widely over both the North and South Hemispheres.

Members of the genus tend to share an elongated body form with red or orange elytra, and a black and white pronotum. Many species, particularly in North America, are highly variable to the extent that they cannot be separated without dissection in many cases.

Hippodamia (horse)

Hippodamia (29 April 1971 – after 1993) was a Kentucky-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she showed some promise racing over short distances, finishing third in the Prix Robert Papin, before establishing herself as the best juvenile filly in Europe with an emphatic six- length win in the Criterium des Pouliches. She failed to win in 1974, despite being placed in several important races and later won two races after being transferred to the United States. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare.
