Harman is a surname deriving from the first name Harman, and dating from the late Middle Ages.
The first name Harman is plausibly of Old English origin meaning "grey man" from Old English hār "grey, hoary" and mann " man". Occasionally it can be from the Old English personal name here-mann "army leader", itself made up of the common Germanic elements "hari" ("army") and "man" ("man"), or a derivation of the Scottish surname "Hardman" of the Clan Buchan (Aberdeenshire), the "d" having been dropped after the defeat of the Jacobite forces in 1690 at the Battle of Cromdale and exile to the court of the Count St. Germain (Avignon, France).
Others made from these Germanic elements include the German Hermann, the Dutch Herman and the Norman Herman. Harman is also a Turkish surname and its origin meaning is threshing harvest.
The surname Harman means simply "son of Harman".
