Influenza \In`flu*en"za\, n. [It. influenza influence, an epidemic formerly attributed by astrologers to the influence of the heavenly bodies, influenza. See Influence.] (Med.) An epidemic viral infectious disease characterized by acute nasal catarrh, or by inflammation of the throat or the bronchi, and usually accompanied by fever and general weakness; also called grippe. It is caused by several forms of RNA virus which mutate readily and thereby render vaccines prepared against older forms ineffective, often requiring a new form of vaccine for each new outbreak.
Douglas Harper's Etymology Dictionary
1776, probably from French grippe "influenza," originally "seizure," verbal noun from gripper "to grasp, hook," of Frankish origin, from Proto-Germanic *gripanan (see grip (v.), gripe). Supposedly in reference to constriction of the throat felt by sufferers; the word spread through European languages after the influenza epidemic during the Russian occupation of Prussia in the Seven Years' War (c.1760), and Russian chirpu, said to be imitative of the sound of the cough, is sometimes said to be the origin or inspiration for the word.

Grippe is the debut album by post-hardcore band, Jawbox. It was released in May 1991 on Dischord Records.
Recorded throughout the year of 1990, Jawbox's first effort was generally brushed off by critics as a sloppy but promising debut. According to Allmusic, it was "essentially recorded after getting enough songs together to fill out a 12" chunk of vinyl" calling it "an enjoyable, albeit introspectively brutal record." Reviewer Andy Kellman also described the music included in the album as the marriage of the "earlier crunchy side of Joy Division with Throb Throb-era Naked Raygun" while highlighting their cover of the Joy Division track "Something Must Break".
The track "Consolation Prize" appeared in a demo cassette-tape that was floating around the hardcore scene at the time but was a harder, faster more upbeat version than what appeared in the album with a blazing guitar solo.
Grippe may refer to:
