What is "gerrhonotus"

Gerrhonotus is a genus of anguid lizards that are commonly referred to as alligator lizards, due to a vague resemblance to the alligator. There are five currently recognized species in the genus:

• Gerrhonotus farri Bryson & Graham, 2010 - Farr's alligator lizard
• Gerrhonotus infernalis Baird, 1859 - Texas alligator lizard
• Gerrhonotus liocephalus Wiegmann, 1828 - smooth-headed alligator lizard
• Gerrhonotus lugoi C.J. McCoy, 1970 - Lugo's alligator lizard
• Gerrhonotus parvus Knight & Scudday, 1985 - pygmy alligator lizard
