declaration

mid-14c., "action of stating," from Old French declaration, from Latin declarationem (nominative declaratio), noun of action from past participle stem of declarare (see declare). Meaning "proclamation, public statement" is from 1650s. Declaration of independence is recorded from 1776 (the one by the British American colonies seems to be the first so called; though the phrase is not in the document itself, it was titled that from the first in the press).

Declaration (poker)

There are several actions in poker called declaration, in which a player formally expresses his intent to take some action (which he may perform at a later point). For example, one may verbally declare an action (fold, call, raise) while in turn, which obligates the player to complete that action. One may declare a number of cards to draw in a draw poker game (which is typically not binding), or one may declare some other choice specific to the variant being played.

But most commonly, the term refers to the declaration in the final phase of a high-low split game, in which players indicate whether their hands are to be evaluated as high hands, low hands, or both at showdown. This is only one option for high-low split games; the other is known as " cards speak", in which players simply reveal their hands at showdown and award the pot to the highest and lowest hands shown (possibly subject to qualifications). Cards speak is used commonly in casinos because it is the much simpler method. High-low with declaration is common in home games.

Declaration is the tenth studio album by the Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman. It was released on September 25, 2001, by Sparrow Records and it has been certified Gold.

The national concert tour that followed with Nichole Nordeman as the opening act, traveled to over 70 cities in 2002. The tour featured a re-telling of the story of five missionaries who were killed by the Huaorani people in 1956 while working in Ecuador. Each night after the story, Chapman introduced Steve Saint (the son of the slain missionary Nate Saint) and Mincaye (a native who killed the missionaries) as his guests on-stage. On Declaration, Mincaye can be heard chanting in his native language at the end of "No Greater Love".

Declaration (computer programming)

In computer programming, a declaration specifies properties of an identifier: it declares what a word (identifier) means."A declaration specifies the interpretation and attributes of a set of identifiers. A definition of an identifier is a declaration for that identifier that:

  • for an object [variable or constant], causes storage to be reserved for that object;
  • for a function, includes the function body;
  • for an enumeration constant, is the (only) declaration of the identifier;
  • for a typedef name, is the first (or only) declaration of the identifier."

C11 specification, 6.7: Declarations, paragraph 5. Declarations are most commonly used for functions, variables, constants, and classes, but can also be used for other entities such as enumerations and type definitions. Beyond the name (the identifier itself) and the kind of entity (function, variable, etc.), declarations typically specify the data type (for variables and constants), or the type signature (for functions); types may also include dimensions, such as for arrays. A declaration is used to announce the existence of the entity to the compiler; this is important in those strongly typed languages that require functions, variables, and constants, and their types to be specified with a declaration before use, and is used in forward declaration. The term "declaration" is frequently contrasted with the term "definition", but meaning and usage varies significantly between languages; see below.

Declarations are particularly prominent in languages in the ALGOL tradition, including the BCPL family, most prominently C and C++, and also Pascal. Java uses the term "declaration", though Java does not have separate declarations and definitions.

Declaration (law)

In law, a declaration ordinarily refers to a judgment of the court or an award of an arbitration tribunal is a binding adjudication of the rights or other legal relations of the parties which does not provide for or order enforcement. Where the declaration is made by a court, it is usually referred to as a declaratory judgment. Less commonly, where declaratory relief is awarded by an arbitrator, it is normally called a declaratory award.

Declaratory relief is most commonly seen in two particular circumstances:

  1. applications for declarations of legitimacy, in family and probate legal proceedings; and
  2. under insurance policies, for a determination of whether a peril is covered by a particular policy.

However, applications for declaratory relief in other areas have become more widespread, particularly in Europe. A key feature in relation to this development has been the Brussels and Lugano Conventions on civil jurisdiction and judgments relating to members of the European Economic Area (EEA). In certain circumstances, jurisdiction is awarded under the conventions to the courts first seised of the matter. This has led to a rise in defendants taking pre-emptive action by seeking "declarations of non-liability" in a race to the courthouse to ensure that they choose the court first seised rather than waiting for the claimant to do so.

Declaration (Bleeding Through album)

Declaration is the fifth album by American metalcore band Bleeding Through. The song's titles are named after different states and cities. Frontman Brandan Schieppati commented, "There are definitely places when we're traveling where every time we go there, we're like, 'Fuck, why do we have to be here?' Like, we'll be in France and all of a sudden we'll feel totally insignificant. You get the feeling that people's eyes are just burning a hole through you."

The album was scheduled for release in August. Schieppati claims it will be heavier than the band's 2003 release, This Is Love, This Is Murderous, and bridges the gap between This Love and The Truth, "The melodies are darker, the riffs are heavier. We just wrote a really aggressive record that encompasses everything we've ever tried to do as a band and then raised the bar a notch or two."

During the Soundwave the band previewed a new song from the album called "Orange County Blonde And Blue". The song can be watched on YouTube.

Bleeding Through recently stated in an MTV blog they have finished the record and released details of the album, but do not intend to hand the masters over to Trustkill until numerous issues be resolved. This leaves the supposed August 2008 release date up in the air. Subsequently, they asked to be dropped from Trustkill in the same blog. Whilst playing at Download Festival in June 2008 Bleeding Through's front man Brandan Schieppati said with regards to the albums "We are having trouble with our record label, so when the new record comes out, steal it, download it illegally, do what you fucking want, as long as you the fans hear it".

On June 12, one track from the new album named "Orange County Blonde And Blue" was uploaded to the band's official MySpace page. It is unclear how long the track will remain on the page, as the band have stated it is there "for a limited time". Also it has been made apparent by joining an official fan site called Dearly Demented, which is supported by the band, a person will receive the song "Germany". Many I Killed The Prom Queen fans were disappointed to hear newly recruited guitarist, Jona Weinhofen, would not be contributing any vocals to the album.

On August 21, Bleeding Through announced they would be filming a video for " Death Anxiety" that weekend. It will be directed by Dave Brodsky ( All That Remains, Black Dahlia Murder and Gwar) in Los Angeles, California.

The album sold just under 6,000 copies in its first week of release to debut at #104 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Usage examples of "declaration".

Friends in Massachusetts reported to Adams that because of Common Sense the clamor for a declaration of independence was never greater.

Above all, with his sense of urgency and unrelenting drive, Adams made the Declaration of Independence happen when it did.

IT HAD BEEN NINE YEARS since the First Continental Congress at Philadelphia, eight years since Lexington and Concord, seven since the Declaration of Independence, and more than three years since John Adams had last left home in the role of peacemaker.

If Adams had had any thought of asking for a declaration of war before Congress adjourned, he changed his mind.

More common was the opinion that a formal declaration of war could not come too soon, a view most strongly held by those nearest Adams, including his wife.

CONTRARY TO THE expectations of nearly everyone, Adams did not ask for a declaration of war against France.

If Adams had any thoughts or feelings about the passing of the epochal eighteenth century--any observations on the Age of Enlightenment, the century of Johnson, Voltaire, the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the age of Pitt and Washington, the advent of the United States of America--or if he had any premonitions or words to the wise about the future of his country or of humankind, he committed none to paper.

WITH 1826 marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it was not long into the new year when Adams and Jefferson were being asked to attend a variety of celebrations planned to commemorate the historic event on the Fourth of July.

As once he had been determined to drive a declaration of independence through Congress, or to cross the Pyrenees in winter, so Adams was determined now to live to see one last Fourth of July.

It was his creative work that he wished most to be remembered for: Here Was Buried THOMAS JEFFERSON Author of the Declaration of American Independence, Of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, And Father of the University of Virginia Adams had, however, composed an inscription to be carved into the sarcophagus lid of Henry Adams, the first Adams to arrive in Massachusetts, in 1638.

Republican party adopts the declaration of President Hayes, that the reform in the civil service shall be thorough, radical, and complete, and to that end demands the co-operation of the Legislative with the Executive Departments of the Government.

I know that many times at meals and during our walks in the roof park the others have relinquished your body to you, and that after your first declaration, you have not shamed yourself in your actions or words.

Declaration and surgeon general of the Continental Army, started one of the first antislavery associations.

Then the young members of the Green Guards were urged to undertake marches in all corners of the country in support of the Arusha Declaration.

A long revolutionary column of one hundred and six people, of all ages, is advancing south toward the capital where the gallant marchers will make revolutionary contacts with party leaders, and pledge their support for the Arusha Declaration.
