Chelsea (name)

Chelsea was first a place name of Old English origin, and the most common theory of its meaning is chalk landing place, Cealc-hyĆ° = " chalk wharf".

The Synod of Chelsea at Chelchith in 787 is often identified with Chelsea, London; but the first firm record is of a manor at Chelsea just before the Norman conquest. Today this original Chelsea is part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and is pronounced . From this origin other usages and places have arisen. For example, Chelsea, Manhattan, takes its name from a Federal-style house in the area which had been named after the manor of Chelsea, London.

The personal name Chelsea is a 20th-century coinage and is also pronounced , or , and sometimes spelled Chelsie or Chelsey. In the United States, the spelling "Chelsea" first entered the Social Security Administration baby naming data chart in 1969 at position 708. It rose in popularity among names for girls after 1980, peaking in 1992 at #15. As of 2009 it was ranked #231.

This name is possibly linked with British pop culture of the late 1960s and Joni Mitchell's song " Chelsea Morning" (named after the Manhattan district). For example, Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former U.S. president Bill Clinton and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is named after the song as performed by Judy Collins.

Chelsea (beverage)

Chelsea was a low-alcohol (0.5%) carbonated beverage created by Anheuser-Busch in the late 1970s. It was test-marketed in several American cities, including Richmond, Virginia and Springfield, Massachusetts, as the "not so soft drink."

In addition to its alcohol content, Chelsea was also somewhat unique for its time in that it featured 100% natural flavors. It also had 1/3 less sugar than found in most soft drinks. Another unusual aspect of the beverage was that it was pasteurized, which allowed it to be promoted as containing no artificial preservatives.

Chelsea ran afoul of anti-alcohol advocates for supposedly whetting teen appetites for alcoholic beverages. The drink, available in 10 oz., 32 oz. glass bottles and 12 oz. aluminum cans, was legal for all ages and tasted like ginger ale with a slightly beerish aftertaste (ingredients included lemon and lime juice, apple flavor, and ginger).

However, the stop is planned to be moved to a new accessible station in late 2017 in conjunction with a new branch of the Silver Line bus rapid transit service.

The song features a melody that is similar to The Eurythmics' " Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)".

"Chelsea" was written by Jimmy Harry, Greg Kurstin and Stefy Rae, while production was handled by Harry. The song received mixed reviews from music critics, who favorably compared it to the works of Gwen Stefani and Blondie, but found it to be a "weak" debut single. The song was moderately successful after its release, peaking at number 15 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play, and playing a prominent role in the video game 2006 FIFA World Cup (2006).

In August 1971, the band became Lips (a trio consisting of Criss and his Chelsea bandmates Michael Benvenga and Stan Penridge). By the spring of 1973, Lips was just the duo of Criss and Penridge and eventually disbanded completely.

Their sound has been compared to the Moody Blues and Procol Harum.
