A bird dog is a type of gun dog or hunting dog used to hunt or retrieve birds or other small game animals. by tracking their scent in the air. Bird dog breeds are receptive to being trained to retrieve hunted birds. In the Southern United States the term bird dog refers to dog breeds such as the pointer, English setter, Red setter, German shorthair pointer, Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever, Brittany, and other pointing breeds.

Bird Dog is an album released in 1987 by The Verlaines. The album is often considered to be The Verlaines best, most introspective piece of work, with songs such as Slow Sad Love Song, Bird Dog and C.D., Jimmy, Jazz and Me all appearing on You're just too obscure for me, the group's only compilation to span their entire career. Slow Sad Love Song was the first song Graeme Downes ever wrote, in 1980, inspired by the suicide of a friend.

"Bird Dog" is a song written by Boudleaux Bryant and recorded by the Everly Brothers released in 1958 and was a #1 hit on the Billboard Country Chart. The song also hit number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as well as peaking at number two for three weeks on the R&B charts.

The musical structure is relatively unusual in that it has a 12 bar blues stanza and an 8 bar blues chorus.
