Audition (novel)

is a Japanese novel by Ryu Murakami published in 1997 and published in English in 2009. It was the basis for the film by Takashi Miike released in 1999 and an upcoming English-language film adaptation.

Audition (1999 film)

is a 1999 Japanese horror film, based on the novel of the same name, directed by Takashi Miike. It is about a recent widower, Shigharu Aoyama ( Ryo Ishibashi), whose son suggests that he find a new wife. Aoyama agrees, and with a friend, stages a phoney audition to meet a potential new partner in life. After interviewing several women, Aoyama becomes interested in Asami ( Eihi Shiina), who responds well to him, although as they begin to date, her dark past begins to affect their relationship.

Audition was originally started by the Japanese company Omega Project, who wanted to make a horror film after the great financial success of their previous production Ring. To create the film, the company purchased the rights to Ryu Murakami's book Audition, and hired screenwriter Daisuke Tengan and director Miike to film an adaptation. The cast and crew consisted primarily of people Miike had worked with on previous projects, with the exception of Shiina, who had worked as a model prior to beginning a career in film. The film was shot in about three weeks in Tokyo.

The film premièred, with a few other Japanese horror films, at the Vancouver International Film Festival, but it began to receive much more attention when it was shown at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2000, where it received the FIPRESCI Prize and the KNF Award. Following a theatrical release in Japan, the film continued to play at festivals and had theatrical releases in the United States and United Kingdom, followed by several home media releases. Audition was received positively by Western film critics on its release, with many noting the final torture sequence in the film and how it contrasts with the non-horrific scenes prior. The film has been listed on several Best Horror Film lists and has had an influence on other horror films and directors including Eli Roth and the Soska sisters.

Audition

An audition is a sample performance by an actor, singer, musician, dancer or other performer. It typically involves the performer displaying their talent through a previously memorized and rehearsed solo piece or by performing a work or piece given to the performer at the audition or shortly before. In some cases, such as with a model or acrobat, the individual may be asked to demonstrate a range of professional skills. Actors may be asked to present a monologue. Singers will perform a song in a popular music context or an aria in a Classical context. A dancer will present a routine in a specific style, such as ballet, tap dance or hip-hop, or show his or her ability to quickly learn a choreographed dance piece.

The audition is a systematic process in which industry professionals select performers, which is in some ways analogous to a job interview in the regular job market. In an audition, the employer is testing the ability of the applicant to meet the needs of the job and assess how well the individual will take directions and deal with changes. After some auditions, after the performer has demonstrated their abilities in a given performance style, the audition panel may ask a few questions that resemble those used in standard job interviews (e.g., regarding availability).

Auditions are required for many reasons in the performing arts world. Often, employing companies or groups use auditions to select performers for upcoming shows or productions. An audition for a performing opportunity may be for a single performance (e.g., doing a monologue at a comedy club), for a series or season of performances (a season of a Broadway play), or for permanent employment with the performing organization (e.g., an orchestra or dance troupe). Auditions for performing opportunities may be for amateur, school, or community organizations, in which case the performers will typically not be paid. As well, auditions are used to select or screen candidates for entry to training programs (ballet school or circus school); university programs ( B.Mus, M.Mus, MFA in Theater); performance-related scholarships and grants; or to be considered for representation by a talent agency or individual agent.

Audition (Glee)

"Audition" is the second season premiere and twenty-third episode overall of the American television series Glee. The episode was written by Ian Brennan, directed by Brad Falchuk, and premiered on the Fox network on September 21, 2010. In "Audition", the glee club members attempt to attract new recruits, including foreign exchange student Sunshine Corazon ( Charice) and transfer student Sam Evans ( Chord Overstreet). A new football coach, Shannon Beiste ( Dot-Marie Jones), arrives at McKinley High, and school blogger Jacob Ben Israel ( Josh Sussman) provides updates on the glee club's summer break.

The episode features eight musical and dance performances, five of which were released as singles, available for download. Musical performances attracted mixed reviews from critics. Lea Michele's rendition of "What I Did for Love" from A Chorus Line was described by Robert Bianco of USA Today as putting "every amateur musical performance on every TV talent show this year to shame", though both Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times and Todd VanDerWerff of The A.V. Club found it incongruous in context. Charice's performances were well received by American and Filipino critics, and Alicia Keys expressed approval of the Glee cast cover of " Empire State of Mind".

"Audition" was watched by 12.45 million American viewers, and attained Glee series high Nielsen rating in the 18–34 demographic. It received generally favorable reviews from critics, and Entertainment Weekly Tim Stack and the New York Post Jarett Wieselman both stated that it had assuaged their fears of the show declining in quality in its second season. Brett Berk of Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone Erica Futterman both felt the show had returned to form following an increasingly disappointing first season. Several critics highlighted racial issues with the episode: Fred Topel of Hollywood News described a scene involving Sunshine as "downright racist", and Brittany Drye of The Stir also questioned the pairing of Asian characters Mike Chang ( Harry Shum, Jr.) and Tina Cohen-Chang ( Jenna Ushkowitz).

Audition (2005 film)

Audition is a Canadian comedy-drama film, released in 2005.

Written and directed by Luc Picard, the film stars Picard as Louis, an unhappy middle-aged repo man who decides to pursue his long-abandoned dream of becoming an actor. He quickly lines up an opportunity to audition for a role, and rehearses for his big day with actor Philippe Chevalier ( Denis Bernard), while his girlfriend Suzie ( Suzanne Clément) is preparing to leave him because she has just found out that she is pregnant but does not want her child to grow up in the atmosphere of violence created by Louis' current job.

The film was partially inspired by a letter Picard wrote to his own four-year-old son.

In 2009, it was reported that Picard had secured a deal to direct an English-language adaptation of L'Audition for an American film studio, although the film never materialized.
