Andron (architecture)

Andron ( Greek: andrōn), or andronitis ( andrōnitis), is part of a Greek house that is reserved for men, as distinguished from the gynaeceum ( gunaikeion), the women's quarters. The andron was used for entertaining male guests. For this purpose the andron held several couches, usually an odd number to allow space for the door, tables which could be tucked under the couches, artwork and any other necessary paraphernalia. Not all classical Greek houses were large enough to have a dedicated andron, and even those that did might have used the room for mixed-gendered events and women receiving female guests, as well as men hosting symposia. In excavations at Olynthos, rooms identified as andrones contained items identified with female activities, as in the rest of the house.

Andron

Andron is the name of a number of different people in classical antiquity:

  • Andron of Alexandria was a writer whose work entitled The Years is referred to by Athenaeus around the late 2nd century BCE.
  • Andron of Ephesus, who wrote a work on the Seven Sages of Greece, which seems to have been titled Tripod .
  • Andron of Halicarnassus was a Greek historian who was mentioned by Plutarch in conjunction with Hellanicus.
  • Andron of Teos was an ancient writer, and author of a work titled Circumnavigation , who is probably the same person as the one referred to by Strabo, Stephanus of Byzantium, and others. He may also have been the same as the author of About Affinity .
  • Andron, an ancient sculptor, whose age and country are unknown. He was known to have made a statue of Harmonia, the daughter of Mars and Venus.
  • Andron (physician) was an ancient Greek physician.
Andron (physician)

Andron was a physician of ancient Greece who is supposed by André Tiraqueau, and after him by Johann Albert Fabricius, to be the same person as Andreas of Carystus. Other scholars have concluded this to be a mistake which has arisen from earlier writers reading "Andron" in the works of Pliny the Elder instead of "Andreas".

He is mentioned by Athenaeus, and several of his medical prescriptions are preserved by Aulus Cornelius Celsus, Galen, Caelius Aurelianus, Oribasius, Aëtius of Amida, Paulus Aegineta, and other ancient writers. None of his works are in existence, nor is anything known of the events of his life; and with respect to his date, it can only be said with certainty that, as Celsus is the earliest author who mentions him, he must have lived some time before the beginning of the Christian era.

Seeing that these splendors fascinated him, but their inaccessibility saddened him, I thought it was good to convince him that his suffering was not the worst, to tell him of the torment of Andronicus with such details that they far surpassed what had been done to him, of the massacres of Crema, of prisoners with a hand, an ear, the nose cut off, I brought before his eyes images of indescribable maladies compared to which leprosy was the lesser evil, I told him how horrendously horrible were scrofula, erysipelas, St.
