Alexis (poet)

Alexis (; c. 375 BC – c. 275 BC) was a Greek comic poet of the Middle Comedy period. He was born at Thurii (in present-day Calabria, Italy) in Magna Graecia and taken early to Athens, where he became a citizen, being enrolled in the deme Oion and the tribe Leontides. It is thought he lived to the age of 106 and died on the stage while being crowned. According to the Suda, a 10th-century encyclopedia, Alexis was the paternal uncle of the dramatist Menander and wrote 245 comedies, of which only fragments now survive, including some 130 preserved titles.

Alexis (given name)

Alexis is a given name derived from the Greek word ἀλέξω or aléxo, meaning "to help, defend." It was the name of several saints venerated by the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, including Saint Alexis of Rome, and of a Russian tsar, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich of Russia. It was used as a name for several other members of the ruling house of Russia, including Alexei Nikolaevich, Tsarevich of Russia and Alexei Petrovich, Tsarevich of Russia.

The name was traditionally male, though it has been in use as a girls' name in the United States since at least the 1940s, when actress Alexis Smith (born Gladys Smith) began appearing in movies, and has been among the top 50 most popular names for girls in the United States since 1990. In the 2008 book 5-Star Baby Name Advisor, author Bruce Lansky writes that the girls name has the image of a "sexy and seductive knockout." The increase in popularity of the name is sometimes attributed to the 1981 debut of the character Alexis Colby on the American television series Dynasty. A 1978 movie, Ice Castles, featured as the main character a blind figure skater named Alexis "Lexie" Winston.

Aleksi, a Finnish variant, was the third most popular name for boys born in Finland in 2007. Alessia, an Italian feminine variant, was the second most common name for girls born in Italy in 2006. Alesia, a feminine variant, and Aleksio, a masculine variant, are currently popular names for boys and girls in Albania.

Alexis (sculptor)

Alexis ( Ancient Greek: ) was an ancient Greek sculptor and statuary, mentioned by Pliny as one of the pupils of Polykleitos. Pausanias mentions an artist of the same name, a native of Sicyon, and father of the sculptor Cantharus. It cannot be satisfactorily settled whether these are the same, or different persons. Pliny's account implies that he had the elder Polykleitos in mind, in which case Alexis could not have flourished later than Olympiad 95 (400 BC), whereas Eutychides, under whom Cantharus studied, flourished about Olympiad 120 (300 BC). If the two were identical, as German classicist Friedrich Thiersch thinks, we must suppose either that Pliny made a mistake, and that Alexis studied instead under Polykleitos the Younger, or else that Eutychides, whose date is given by Pliny, was not the artist under whom Cantharus studied.
