Douglas Harper's Etymology Dictionary
nickname of Franciscan Mission San Antonio de Valeroin (begun 1718, dissolved 1793) in San Antonio, Texas; American Spanish, literally "poplar" (in New Spain, also "cottonwood"), from alno "the black poplar," from Latin alnus "alder" (see alder).\n
\nPerhaps so called in reference to trees growing nearby (compare Alamogordo, New Mexico, literally "big poplar," and Spanish alameda "a public walk with a row of trees on each side"); but the popular name seems to date from the period 1803-13, when the old mission was the base for a Spanish cavalry company from the Mexican town of Alamo de Parras in Nueva Vizcaya.

Alamo
Wikipedia
Alamo is the Spanish name of Populus fremontii, a species of cottonwood or poplar native to the Southwestern United States, and of Populus alba, a similar European species. The Battle of the Alamo was a battle fought during the Texas Revolution.
Alamo may also refer to:
Alamo, also known as the Astor Place Cube or simply The Cube, is an outdoor sculpture by Bernard (Tony) Rosenthal, located on Astor Place, in the East Village, Manhattan, New York City. It takes the form of a black cube, long on each side, mounted on a corner. The cube is made of Cor-Ten steel and weighs about . The faces of the cube are not flat but have various indentations, protrusions, and ledges. The sculpture's name, Alamo, is designated on a small plaque on one corner of the base and was selected by the artist's wife because its scale and mass reminded her of the Alamo Mission.
Usage examples of "alamo".
JENNIFER RED CLOUD christened the iceberg Alamo with a bottle of the mixed waters of the Pecos, Rio Grande, Colorado, Brazos, Neches, Nueces, Trinity, and Guadalupe, the principal rivers of the Republic of Texas, which during the drought, now in its fifth year, had dwindled to little more than muddy rivulets.
This time I will be walking in your shadow from the moment you find your blessed Alamo until it floats away in little pieces.
Lagos, was devoted entirely to the report of Meyer Horowitz on the iceberg Alamo operation.
If that schedule is carried through, the Alamo will be berthed in Matagorda Bay, the Republic of Texas, shortly before the presidential conventions begin.
The other eleven men in the sparsely furnished room knew exactly what he meant: The Alamo must be destroyed.
In short, the Alamo project on which America was pinning its hopes for recovery was for Russia, and for communism as well, the promise of salvation.
To that end, Piatakov demanded every scrap of information that concerned SD-1, the Alamo operation, and Ripley Forte and his associates, their relatives, the friends of their relatives, and the relatives of their friends.
The three options concerned the iceberg Alamo, which Piatakov surmised, based on the information in his files about the Salvation, must still be part of a glacier in Antarctica, as yet unseen by man.
If successfully brought to safe harbor in Matagorda Bay, the Alamo would go far toward relieving the mounting hardships of the republic.
The Alamo had been under satellite surveillance since Triple Eye had received official U.
These so-called gyres are basically what is gong to bring the Alamo into port.
There we have to nudge the Alamo at that point into the Guiana Current that flows up the northern Brazilian coast.
Do you mean that the Alamo is going to float all the way from the Antarctic to Texas on ocean currents?
Still, the currents meander around the shores of the continents, and by the time the Alamo reaches this point, it will still have 9,300 nautical miles to go.
Figuring the current carries the Alamo at an average thirty-two nautical miles per day, it would take us 290 days to reach our destination.
